Should dogs be banned from Badminton

I felt sorry for the dogs today, it was so hot and really busy can't be much fun for the dogs. Also, saw a dog with its leg in plaster - surely that shouldn't be walking around bladders!

I have seen 1000 s of dogs today. Most were well behaved and lovely. Two fab basetts, lots of cocker spaniels, labs, retrievers, GSDs, King Charles, pugs, cross breeds.

There is no excuse re dragging them around shops, there is a pet crèche for £2. Leave the dog there and have it looked after. Feel free to bring them but please I have nearly squashed a springer, tripped over terriers and heard hot crabby dogs trying to scrap.

Whilst having lunch a RSPCA official was walking round all the cars and as I have a dog guard asked if I had a dog with me, no I did not. They had had 76 incidents of dogs left in cars, 19 serious enough for them to take action. Agree leave at home, ask a neighbour, relative or pay someone to let fido out for a wee.

I saw dogs sat in the cramped stands and felt sorry for them.

Copperpot, the number of kids I was nearly taken out by was not good!!!

They should be banned. I would never dream of taking my dog to an event. He would try and fight with all the other dogs, bite people and chase horses. He stays at home.

Also why do people think its acceptable to let their dogs swim in the lake at the end? Discusting behaviour

I almost squished alot of dogs today! Lots of pugs almost got it, lots of dashunds too! And the chihuahua's! (Anyone see the one in the tutu?!)

Also lots managed to wrap their leads around my legs in the crowd as they were obviously worried due to the amount of people surrounding them and trying to look for their owners. I actually saw a man literally dragging a poor little terrier type thing along on his tummy today! He was not a happy doggy!
Most of them were very well behaved but I do think they are a little unnecessary and could potentially cause a nasty accident.

Is it just me or is it only ever scrappy little terriors that get loose?

You know those hulking great dogs that really take a lot of effort to hold back.....

I like the idea of banning children, just the ones that scream though, the others are tolerable. Think screaming children should be banned from public places in general - worse than smokers! ;)

I think children should be banned lol but not dogs why should responsive owners be tarred by the irresponsible! I do though think there should be a 1k fine for any owner whose dog gets loose on the course

I take my dog to events, I took her to Belton this year, she loved it :) However, I do think dogs should be banned. I was calmly sitting on a bench watching the SJ at Belton, and trying to eat my panini, when a out of control, slobbery Labrador jumped up on my lap and tried to snach my food off me. Unlucky for him, I have grown up with dogs, so he found himself lying on the floor before he could even touch the food, I tugged hard at the lead, and the owner emerged, giggling and said ''oooops, sorry'', I gave her my best death stare, and handed her the lead at the length it should have been held at. I was not impressed
So not only dogs ruin the spectators day out, but they also, as seen, can cause a nasty accident. So before they cause that accident, please ban them.
And ban the kids while you're at it please. The amount of crisp packets and sweets packets that were floating around in the SJ was unbelievable!
And Belton is nowhere near as big as badders so I can only imagine what goes on there!

What harm does it do?

The people who left litter lying around and bottles floating in the lake were the disgusting ones.

I wouldn't go without my dogs, who adore the events. We started out in the stands by the lake, they were fine, flirted a bit with some people eating perhaps. They had a great time walking round the course with us. For the first time ever, one of them felt the sun a bit half way round, so we popped them in the creche for an hour's rest while we went on, then picked them up later good as new.

ps. The creche was £10 per dog, not £2. And the kennels were tiny compared to Burghley - I felt like I was putting them in a wardrobe!

I loved seeing all the dogs. 99% of which were perfectly behaved. I didn't have anything lunge or snap at my dogs all day, didn't hear any yapping either (excluding the creche!).

My bug bears of the day were -
Rude people who think that because they have a camera its ok to push in front of people who have been standing there for a while. ~Or people who stand up at the front of the stands when the people sitting behind can't see. We sat at the lake for an hour before it started to get a good view in the grandstand, then five minutes before it started, a load of ladies/girls lined up along the rails blocking the view. Very rude behaviour!

and other possible bans for me -
pushchairs.
Kids not old enough to walk.
Girls with streaky fake tan and short skirts and dubarys - lowers the tone!
Girls with short skirts and streaky fake tans that should clearly not be in a short skirt.
Anyone who gets in their car to leave as soon as the xc ends and sits in a queue for 60 minutes to get to the motorway - shouldn't be allowed out if they can't work out there will be a jam!

Do you have to pay for dogs to come in? If not maybe they need to charge for dogs and use that income to provide free dog creches, watering points etc? I know the £30 I suggested earlier is a bit(!) steep but if dogs were the same price as adult humans then that would make people seriously consider whether to bring them or not and provide some money for doggy facilities.

Tickets are a fortune already. More than half the people there bring dogs, if they all stop coming, or a lot of them, as I would, tickets would have to go up a lot for everyone else too.

As horses don't go to Crufts to have a looksee, can't really understand why people take dogs to big horse events.:D

Can you imagine, 'I want to attend the cricket but the horse needs exercising so I've bought him along and he can graze at the edge of the pitch and have a run round at lunch/tea'.

Don't understand the thinking. Why on earth would a dog want to go to an event like this rather than a nice long walk where they can run around and the owners are focused on them?

Do they enjoy watching the horses and have in depth discussions amongst themselves about who was showing the best form?

Yes. I was there yesterday and would never have dreamed of taking my dog. It was a hot, long day and poor dogs were getting pulled around and trodden on. One poor little black spaniel got told off for pulling very early in the day and later on we saw them again and this time her owner was pulling her by one ear and telling her to walk to heel. No wonder she didn't want to be anywhere near her 'loving' owner. Poor little beggar . We went into the stands later in the day (east side) and the sun was blazing hot and still people came in with their dogs. There was nowhere on that side for the dogs to get shelter though the owners could have sat over the other side (west) and been in the shade. What is wrong with these people.

Do the owners pick up all the poo too? Recently helped out at a BE event putting the show jumps back up all day and had to dodge the piles of poo that were around the course where people had brought their dogs with them to walk the course.

I don't know about Badminton, but I was livid last year at Burghley, when I managed to step in the vilest dog poo that some considerate individual had left right in front of the chairs at the rider interview area.
The dog must have literally had a dump while they sat there, and they left it. Disgusting people :(

Gross.

Signs of a dog-sick nation...

By the way, I sound as if I hate dogs. I don't. I just don't like the way we treat some of them.

The hardy annual question!

Nothing will be done to ban dogs, until there's a serious accident, and the horse owner sues the organisers for failing to prevent an accident when they were already aware of the risk, THEN dogs will be barred from entry, and rightly so, in my view.

My horses will be unlikely to be at Badminton or Burghley, but wherever they were, if they are ever involved in a canine caused accident, then the organisers better have solid insurance. ;)

Alec.

Personally I think they should be banned from the cross country course but allowed elsewhere though I hope the owners pick up after them!

I take my dog to shows but he stays in the truck and only comes out on the lead - sometimes he may be tied up outside but only when I'm there - I'd be worried he'd be pinched!

I got annoyed with people asking us if the actually jump those jumps?!?!?!?.......Erm yes we are at a cross country event, it means horses jump things cross country..... That was by this older couple who were dressed up in tweed and white trousers with a very expensive camera :D

So did anyone see the little Charlie with a skull and cross bone bandanna? :D

Asmp yes I pick up my dogs poo....I took an entire packet of poop bags with me :D as well as two water bottles, water bowel and bag for winalot biscuits and she had regular drink and biscuit breaks and that was in the shade and when there was too many people around she was carried.

Why would be annoyed because someone asked you a question ?

I take mine on dressage day, but would never take him on XC day, there are just too many people around and it's not fair on dogs and humans. Maybe dogs should be banned on XC day.
