It started raining here - and I mean raining - at 7am this morning so I plaited and spent a few hours glued to bdwp and DHB's text updates. It got to 11.30am with no news of cancellation so we loaded up and went. I had Supergroom with me again, plus every waterproof item that I own and a hipflask of whisky mac just in case of waterproof failure! :o

After last week's debacle Fugly was like a lamb to tack and stud up so I had the novelty of arriving in the dressage warm-up mounted! ;) The hoof oil may have been a waste of time however as there wasn't a blade of grass to be seen and we slopped around in fetlock deep mud soup which actually didn't seem to bother him that much. Speaking as a veteran of Blair 2008 I think I am an authority on mud! I was quite chuffed with our test. It was BE102 and nice to have a change.

We walked the XC and whilst it was very wet and sloppy it wasn't overly deep or dangerous and I decided that I'd probably run, albeit steadily. Fugly has hunted a bit and he really doesn't mind too much what he jumps out of. It was probably safer for legs than some of the firm ground that we encountered earlier in the summer.

Meanwhile the rain kept falling..... :(

We turned up to walk the SJing and see whether we could sneak in early. As they changed the course to BE100 height an official came over to tell us that they were abandoning the event :(. The SJing is on a nice surface though so a local pro and I made a case for letting us at least SJ and, after checking that the doctor was still on site , they gave us the go ahead.

Fugly has been jumped several times this week after his laissez-faire attitude at Aske (2 down but hit most of the other 8 ). We've been trying all sorts of exercises, related distances and grids. I particularly liked Clea Phillip's ideas from the BE magazine and the oxer with alternately sloping rails (like a Swedish oxer) was the most useful. We had the ends of the poles at 1.15 and 1.30 so he had to jump pretty big to make it but he hasn't touched a rail all week whether I've had him deep or stood him off so I had my fingers crossed. As always the jump's there but the canter isn't always good enough :(.

He jumped his best round of the season, giving every fence serious air. The last was a 2-stride double - oxer to upright - and he just jumped in too big over the oxer to make the two strides. I seriously thought we were going on one for a second  but he got the two in and had the upright down. Not a worry as the rest of the round was fabulous :D.

My dressage was 29.5 :D :D :D and we got all 7s, barring two 8s - one for the right canter and give/retake and one for the final halt :D and one 6 for the FWLR which he doesn't do as well on the half circle compared to the long diagonal. Odd as theoretically it should be easier as you can stretch them down with the inside rein, but that's Fugly for you .

I then had a word with the organisers and persuaded them to run the section competitively as a combined training so we were 9th and got a rosette :). Not brilliant but good enough to finish the season on especially as I was so pleased with both phases.

So the final score is... 10 starts, 5 placings, worst place 16th (in a 5yo section), one retirement (when he was poorly at Beckwithshaw), no XC jumping or time penalties.

Time for a holiday, some R&R and training then roll on 2011! :D

Sounds like a very good season! And probably a sensible decision from them in the end.

It tipped it down here (I'm near Wetherby) until the afternoon when I dared go out for a hack - the stream on my hack through the woods (normally less than fetlock deep) was over my horses knees  (he's not as big as fugly but still a leggy 16.1!)

Are you moving up to Novice next year? Doing any BS over the winter? :)

Blimey! Great dressage :) Shame you didn't get to run XC as I suspect you'd have pulled up the placings, but a brilliant performance nonetheless. Fugly really has been a star all season, you will be so excited by Spring!!

Is the fence you describe what I'd call a St Andrews Cross? You're Scottish, you should know :p

How's the lovely ex-racer? Archie is it? Redeemed himself from dumping you on the road I hope

Just got back from BB myself (BE90 region final). Good grief, what rain!! The Xc was like a mud bath but then again it took 6 buckets of water to wash my horse down after the dressage!!

Anyway, mediocre dressage because of the usual blind judge but clear SJ and XC and foot to the floor XC so 'only' 6 time pens XC so 4th overall which I think qualifies us for Badminton as there were 23 dressage starters.

Well done! Yes with 23 starters there would be at least 4 qualify - if not 5 if they round up. Great result!:D

Needed webbed feet out eventing today - it was the same down south although we did get to go xc.

Fabulous finish to a fabulous season and i've loved following Fugly. :) Looking forward to the BD reports ;)

Good thinking to get them to redefine the event. What on earth would they have done with those spare frillies? Very well done to you and Fugly on a super-successful season :)

Oh no! i feel bad for telling you the ground was good and encouraging you to go. Sounds like you had a good day though, very jealous of you dressage.
Maybe wel bump into each other next season somewhere!! xx

What a great season. Well done. You must be excited about next year.

Doh! I was standing next to you in the prizegiving I think - I'm very tall and had a waxed Aussie hat on, black Berhaus and waterproof trousers. I picked up the 7th place in your section for a friend and Charliemouse was 4th in the other RF and she'd done the maths and was certain that she'd qualified.

Blooming well done. The rain was something else, wasn't it!

Well done - especially the dressage! Fugly obviously isn't such a wimp as Sam when it comes to mud! Feesl like a bit of a rubbish end to season but I am glad we didn't go XC - maybe our fall last week has got to me more than I thought, but course looked disgusting at 10am with massive puddles in front of the jumps. Isn't it interesting that they cancelled after the regional final?! They moved some of the intro fences before they started the XC this morning so were obviously desperate for it to run. Would have caused a huge headache for BE if they hadn't I suppose.

Wow what a dressage score, impressive season overall as well, you must be looking forward to the 2011 season, I will look forward to your reports:)

We drove through some like that on the way home!

Yes, am planning 2ish PN runs then Nov next season. I think we're both a bit bored with BE100!

We've got a BD outing  on Tuesday after which he'll have 6 weeks off then I'll join BS too (their membership runs from when you join so no point joining until an outing is imminent!).

Yup, a St Andrew's cross. And as someone who spent most of my youth in that town I ought to know! :o I had two sloping poles on top and a ground pole on either side so I could jump it both ways. The thinking is that a) it works a bit like a X pole and keeps the horse in the middle b) it looks a bit unusual and they have to use their brains to jump it and c) although they might have to jump 1.25 (in our case) to clear the centre it looks a lot less imposing than a straight 1.25 oxer so gives the horse (and rider! ;)) a way of getting confident jumping bigger fences without necessarily overfacing them.

Archie was sold to a girl in Warwickshire last week as a 'promising young event prospect' - no trace of the phrase 'ex-racehorse' there..... ;)

DHB/WeeBrown - was very pleased really. To be honest there was nothing on the XC that I was even remotely worried about and ahving a horse that after dressage looked like it had enjoyed a good day hunting I was in no great rush to prove the point. I just knew we had a sub-30 dressage in there somewhere and am glad I found it before the end of the season!

AutumnRose - you had a MUCH better day than me today! Hope the back's feeling better. I've still got those tablets I could send you.... ;) We can sadly only do prelim on Tuesday as I can't get any points ahead of a RC team appearance but i have threats from my dressage trainer about what will happen if we're not winning elementary before the end of then winter . And she's sat on Fugs so really ought to know better! :p

Rosiefan - I was not going home without a rosette and would have sat there all night if necessary!! I don't think it had even occurred to them to run the CT competitively. In fact when I went into the scorers' office to check what the score  was I found them all watching yesterday's WEG XC on a big screen

Charlotte125 - in the nicest possible way I hope I don't meet you next year. Or at least not in the same section!! Don't worry, I knew that it would be iffy when I set off and at least you missed the rain!

not surprised they abandoned it, ran in the intro this am and conditions were dire, did our dressage in torrential rain rolled 2 sj clear xc to finish 9th hope it stops raining this week otherwise that will be our season finished,. if askham bryan is waterlogged. fingers crossed for dry week

LEC - it's been my best season ever, by a long chalk. I've won an EHOA bursary so can finally afford some decent training over the winter and have half an eye on the 6yo champs for next season but obviously that is putting the cart slightly before the horse! :o

Jumptoit - I really don't think he noticed the conditions. I, on the other hand, did !

Soupdragon - oddly I made the same commetn about them cancelling almost exactly at the same time as the last RF competitor finished the XC! There were only going to be about 20 of our section run but obviously the risk suddenly became too much! At least I don't have a car full of disgusting XC stuff to sort out. I'm sorry you trekked all that way for a bad day though :(.

Alwaysbroke - more excited than you can imagine!! :)

Thanks :) I've got a bit of a pharmacy going on at the moment so set for drugs for now ta ;) I must get my BD form sent off asap :) Thought of arenas and indoor schools and tarmac lorry parks are very appealing after wading about the place today!!

Ah - I've been on holiday so may have missed that news! I did think there was no chance you'd be keeping him over (an expensive ;)) winter! Is that the shortest turnaround yet?!

Luckily we were on fresh field but most of the boxes were in huge 2ft tracks with no grass to be seen! My poor friend was trying to stud up her horse with it falling down huge mud holes and getting plastered. Not fun!

It's easy for me! Due to an excess of cheekiness Mr Fugly has to be studded up in the trailer so it's the same come rain or shine. However it was all a bit irrelevant really as there is no stud on the planet designed to cope with 4 inch deep mud soup. Maybe I should invent the Flipper Stud? (patent pending!! :p)

Definitely fingers crossed for Askham Bryan, have a few friends heading there. Sounds like you did pretty well in the conditions. Is your horse now sporting a fetching baby blue rosette like Fugly?

Thats fab! 'Fugly the Mud Muncher' :) Well done you for bullying *ahem* I mean persuading the organisers to run as a combined training comp, I can't believe they were going to abandon when the sj was on a surface! Just out of interest if they had cancelled and you had only managed your dressage test would they have refunded you?....

I think he's had a fab season and let's not forget the almost dying of starvation post accident event you also manged - Game Bird - 'against all odds' :) I think that should be your moto :) ;)

Chloe - they had a force to be reckoned with when they thought they could do me out of jumping, especially after all the effort we put in this week! I don't think they have to refund you if a certain percentage have started dressage and unfortunately for us ;) almost all of our section had done dressage when they abandoned :(.

I like your motto! :) Let's face it, 'odd' is something that Fugly and I can both do well! :o
