Hi everyone I am waiting to start a YouTube channel but the only problem is that I have my horse stable in a livery yard. Should I ask the yard owner if it okay to film and upload videos since it they own the yard or should I just upload my riding videos and say nothing.

You definitely have to ask, and I think you can't be too surprised if they say no I'm afraid. Maybe think in advance of all the different issues there could be, and if there are any measures you could take to make the owner feel more comfortable. Not mention being careful not to accidentally film anyone else in the background etc.

Ultimately its private property, so it's the land owner's decision at the end of the day.

Yes its a matter of courtesy.

If there are children on the yard you will need to remove any footage where they appear in the background as I don't think I'd want to go down the route of parental permission as I'd imagine you'd need consent forms in writing rather than just verbal permission however correct me if I'm wrong

I'd be inclined to ask other liveries out of courtesy as some may not want to be in the background etc, so you'd need to film when they aren't riding. Some may just not want to be but you could have someone who can't have their location disclosed

Someone who's daughter used to ride/ help at the rs used to take loads of photos and videos, I allowed her to add photos to the yard Facebook page but I did refuse permission for the you tube channel she was creating as while it probably wouldn't get that many views, I didn't want "randoms" seeing my horse/ me on the videos. I have very locked down FB and Instagram so I felt like it was my privacy even though I wouldn't have been named (I think!) I said no.

I'm just a livery on a large private yard. I'd have no issues with you asking the YO about filming yourself riding in the menage alone.
Videoing the yard, fields and other horses and/ or owners wouldn't be acceptable though. Its a private place and it's my horses home.
Good luck with your project.

Nope you don’t have to ask
I have done filming course a few years ago. it want into laws and what you can or cannot film. Once you own your horse and aren’t filming other people or there horses. Technically speaking a livery yard is classed as a business so you don’t need permission to film.

YouTube is no different to this forum or any other social media platform . People don’t need permission to put a picture up of there horse on Facebook or this forum. I actually now a a few people have there own equestrian Youtube channel that are extremely popular. They have never told the yard owners because they would have been rejected straight away. They are completely fine nobody has found out about them.

It depends on what you want to but remember you don’t legally have to ask for permission. If you want to ask out of courtesy than that’s completely up to you.

I'm sorry, but this isn't correct; a livery yard, regardless of it being a business, is private property and you therefore need permission to film - just like you would in a restaurant or shop. You are not allowed to walk freely onto any livery yards apart from via a public footpath should there be one, and even then you wouldn't be able to film parts of the property that are not on the footpath.

It's not about whether you need permission to legally film really. It's about whether you should ask. And yes you should ask! It would be really rude not to and if I was a YO and I found someone was doing this without notifying me first I would be extremely upset and displeased. There are all kinds of issues that could arise, around security, around other people's privacy, around safeguarding.... there's a difference between short snippets of you own horse on a yard on Facebook and Instagram (I wouldn't object to this, and have done it myself) vs longer YouTube videos and a dedicated YouTube channel.

Yes of course you should ask. Common courtesy apart from anything else. It is someone else's property you are using and filming. Just the same as if you had a guest round who started filming themselves in your house and garden and putting it on youtube. You'd expect them to ask wouldn't you?

If you’re only filming yourself riding, I’ll change my answer to “it’s not necessary to ask, but it would still be polite to do so”. But if you also film in the stable or on the grounds, or other people or their horses are in the background, or share the arena, you should ask.

What could happen if you were filming in the tack room and someone happened to notice that your stablemates have expensive equipment? How is surveillance on the yard? Could someone with ill intent notice where security cams are placed from watching your video? Etc. That’s the sort of stuff you need to consider.

I dont have a yard but I do have a little rider for my ponies and I request that any videos and pictures do not include anything that may identify the location or any security measures - it may be worth backing up your request with promises of what you will and wont film, they may be reassured by that
