well at Mossburn i ride Blacky, the one in my sig and in the paddock down the road there are a few very small jumps! like 1 foot or something

i know last year a girl started to get her used to them by jumping her over them in hand. thing is she is 26 and she doesn't gallop (whether that is age or laziness, only she nows

). do you think in the summer i should try getting her over them with me riding her? she's never jumped before.

hehe i know i wouldn't be galloping them and she goes on hacks, but because it's a rescue centre, riding is an advantage and all other jobs have to be doen first so most weeks she only gets out when i take her on a sunday. she is fine doing an hours hack with plenty trot and canter.

jumping is different to hacking, especially in the more senior ones.

I know of a couple of that age that jump and don't show thier age but also know of some that cannot be ridden at all at that age.

There are all sorts of reasons why her health may not allow her to jump and so you should seek advise from senior staff members who are in charge of her health and care and also if she is fine health to be jumped (popped over a small pole) i would suggest doing so under supervision.

thanks, yeah there would always be someone with me. there are really any senior members of staff that ride. only one so i will ask her what she thinks

only thing is we don't know all that much about her history.

oh she doesn't have any of them things like serious problems.
it's just i wanted to try jumping and there are only really Blacky and another horse Connie that could and connie is 27! lol.
i will talk to people at the yard and see but i won't try it if it's gonna harm her in anyway. we enjoy our slow hacks

i want a job because i want money but it's annoying. i'm not willing to give up mossburn and TBH we're short on helpers and they would struggle losing me even if i am just one pair of hands!

26 is not old at all for over here. Lots of horses over here are still competing regularly at well beyond this age.......however I know that that is rarely the case in the UK. People seem to hide old horses away over there and hardly do anything with them, whether they be healthy or not.

I think it really depends on the level of health first and foremost, and then see how fit and able she is. If she is capable then I can't see anything wrong with it.....however if you are a child then I would advise you ask an adult to make sure that she is in fact capable.

i'm 16 but i would check with the centre's owner first. i'll see what she is like in the summer as she has been getting fitter this past year when i've been working her and now she actually likes to canter and sometimes even canters without being told to!

At one foot, the chances are she'll hardly jump at all anyway. Personally, I don't see why not - afterall, it's hardly any worse than having a buck in the field is it?

Just be careful and don't jump her into the ground/stop if she's not enjoying it. So long as you're sensible, I really don't see what the problem is...
