I went to visit Troy on Saturday afternoon and he is now 15hh

He is 8 months on 12th November...

I have taken some photos of him with me but my camera is in the car so will upload them later on. But the difference in him size wise in just three weeks is incredible. I got a huge shock when he got up.

At the withers...

In the last picture he was actually 14.1hh at the withers (I am 5ft9 so probably make him look smaller than he is)

The stud owner has a 14.2hh pony and Troy towers over it at the withers and his bottom has come up again

What feed is it on? I always worry when I hear people say about foal height as too much feed can really cause problems with the joints growing too fast.
What size is your mare and also the stallion?

Absolutely nothing but grass

He is living out at the moment...

My mare is 16.2hh IDxTB but I don't know her breeding so she could have some big IDs in there, and Pro-Set the stallion is 16.1hh.

mine only gets a small lunch feed and mums milk !! yes i worry to and wont be feeding mine soon - ha ha

mine mum is 16.1hh and dad 16.3hh - both warmbloods !! x

He doesn't get any feed at all, he has always just had his mum's milk and grass, and now just grass as he is living out. He stole some of his Mum's feed when they were together, but Hannah is not the slowest eater so he only used to get one or two mouthfuls.

I have to say, I personally would be worried, but then there is that element of Hannah's pedigree that you don't know.................. Always a gamble breeding when you don't know for sure the pedigree - not saying it was the wrong thing to do mind, coz he is lovely! The only foal I've ever known an 8 month old to be that big, was a Shire x Oldenburg.

Hannah is very like an ID, we think her Mum was the ID and her Dad was the TB... From looking at her you would think she had some big horses on her side of things because of how she is put together. She grows some feather (although not an awful lot) and has a lot of bone in my opinion.

When the vet came out to do his registration documents, estimated height was 17hh which is one I would quite like him to make because I am 5ft9 and can take a bigger horse.

It is the risk you take when you have a horse of unknown breeding, but she is very straight and a nice conformation (apart from being a bit downhill in build but chose a stallion to counteract this) and has produced a very straight foal which was not something I expected with the size of him when he came out!

This was him at an hour old... remember Mum is a full up 16.2hh:

He seemed to find it hard suckling at first because he had to bend his legs to get under her

Bear was out of a 15 hand full TB mare and by Maurice Minor, a full Irish Draught at just under 17 hands. When he came to me at weaning, he was just 6 months and was already 14.1 ish. By his first birthday, he was already nearly 15.2hh. He's now rising 4 (next May) and is 17.3hh with more to come! This was him a week after birth and earlier this year. I must add, that at no time has he had a lot of feed, we were always wary of his joints and he has been by far, the biggest of her foals although a TB made 16.2 so she must have some 'big' genes behind her I think. As you don't know Hannah's lines, that could well be your answer too.

Gosh... 17.3hh

He is a stunning looking horse Pat!

Troy was about 14hh when he went away at 6 1/2 months... He is almost 8 now and is 15hh and looks as though he is growing again as his bottom has come up a bit which it hadn't last time I saw him

I'll try to upload the pictures as soon as I can... I got a real shock when he stood up (was lay down when we got there).

I've got a 2 year old filly by Pro-Set. She is out of a 15 hand CB x TB mare and as you know, Pro is about 16.1. She is already 16 hands and still growing strong! I think perhaps Pro-Set just seems to throw large babies - I'll ask Sharon Baldwin next time I go to Meadow Stud!

Here comes another member of the HUGE foals club ...

Fionn is 5 months, and measured at 13.3 hh a week ago! Mum is IDxTB, and dad a WB (Holstein). Like Troy, he seems to be well put together and is not looking "overgrown" at the moment. We are feeding him a small amount of Bailey's Stud Balancer, but much less than they advise! - and he is also out 24/7 at the moment, on grass that's OK but not high quality. The mare is producing very little milk now, and kicks him off quite often when he tries to feed .... Like everyone else I panic every now and then as to whether I'm feeding enough/too much. One of the key points that all articles on feeding foals seem to make is that you should aim for steady growth if possible. Easier said than done!!

The first 3 we bred out of our 16.1 WBxTB by a 16.3 TB were about 13.3 at weaning. 14.2 at 1 yr old. The 1st 2 made 16.3. The 3rd is about 16.2 at 3 rising 4. Troy does sound big but hopefully he may slow down.

some grow fast and then slow down in the yearling and 2yo phase.i wont worry at all lol.
as long as its steady growth and he isnt having massive spurts that could make ocd more likely i wouldnt worry, esp if you dont mind a taller beastie!

Well Calli was 14hh at 9 months. She is 2.5 years old now and is 16 hands. Her mum was 15.3, dad 16h but grandfather 17hh. But cos she is a sports horse apparently they do all their growing in the early year or and slow down after that. But she is still bum high!!!! Think Troy is going to be a lot bigger than her. Still got to come and see him soon - promise.
