I got my foal on Sunday, he is nearly 5 months old..apparently he has been eating hard food when he was with his mum from his own bucket.. they were feeding him D&H pasture mix and dengie Alfa-A original... i got the same food, same brand but just cannot get him to eat, i have tried it in a bucket, on the floor, sprinkled over his hay, from hand, leaving the food in there for a few hours. Have also tried just giving him pasture mix on its own and alfa on its own but nothing works...

He had one mouthfull today, first time since i got him, although he is eating loads and loads of hay i am starting to get worried...

should i try another type of food???

Any advice on this would be great....

He is a QHxTB

He is probably stressed over the move, if he is eating hay i wouldn't worry too much, can you leave some feed in his stable, he may pick at it. I'm sure he will settle in a few days.

i have left the food in the stable last night but was untouched this morning... he went out with a friend today, walked out perfect, eating grass straight away but when it was time to come in that was another story.. the little bugger..:)

Have tried to tempt him with carrots and apples but he does not know how to eat out of hand and when sprinkled over his hay its still there in the morning...

am going up there again soon so i will see if he has eaten anything...

your probably right he is more than likely sad, he had a 3.5 hour journey in the freezing cold, taken away from his mum and friends and put into a new yard with strange people and horses.... I AM SO CRUEL

Could you try feeding him with his friend. My foal has his own bucket when I feed the herd (7) but he still eats out of mums. Once they have finished hers they start on his

I wouldn't worry if I were u. I'm a sucker for buying foals - none of them handled & they never eat hard feed at first.

My 7m foal I have now was supposedly eating hard feed when I got him 2m ago & it's only now he's started eating it with me. His brother was the same last year (now rising 2). They both ate haylage & grass. Murph started copying the others, I tried all the tactics you have but couldn't get him to eat, now he's first over for feed. Do u have a friend for him that could show him the ropes?
