Should I be worried?

A bit worried about my GSD today. We had a nasty incident yesterday when he ran off chasing a herd of deer. To cut a long story short he was found by some lovely cyclists half an hour later wandering in the road. They caught him and took him to the side of the road where he apparently collapsed/lay down until my husband came across them. We were so lucky he didn't get hit by a car as a friend lost her dog recently in exactly the same place and in the same circumstances.

He soon perked up and walked back to the car and appeared fine last night - went for his walk and eat his dinner as usual. Today he is very subdued and he has been sick but only brought up grassy stuff (hasn't been fed yet today). He usually sticks to my OH like glue but today would prefer to be inside with me than pottering outside with OH. His breathing sounds a bit laboured too. He is a fit 18 month old dog.

Should I be worried or is he just tired and aching from his exertion yesterday?

Thanks for reading. :o

I would speak to the vets - it's possible a car caught him a glancing blow. Give the vet a ring and see what they say.

I would definitely get him checked by your vet. He could have been hit by a car, or found something nasty to eat. At 18 months I wouldn't have expected half an hours running around to have left him suffering any after affects .

Oh and I know that hindsight is a wonderful thing, but if your friends lost their dog in the same place in the same way and your dog has now done a runner, please, please keep him on a lead in that area x

We were in Ashridge Forest, nr Berkhamstead. We saw alot of deer yesterday I understand they are planning a cull as the population is out of control. In the past it has been rare to see deer in the middle of the day anywhere near the roads.

We won't be going back there again. My friends dog was obedience and agility trained but when they go off chasing deer recall seems to go out of the window.

OH has spoken to vet and he is on way to vet now.

OH and dog now back from vets. Dog's muscles are very tight and he has a temperature. Vet has given him an anti-inflammatory and an antibiotic injection. Vet thinks he's just overdone it. Apparently he knows of dogs that have run until they drop down dead chasing deer.

Poor boy is looking very tired. He can't keep his eyes open.

He is going back tomorrow for a check-up as vet thinks he will be worse tomorrow.

Thanks everyone.

Hope he's okay!

Just a thought- could he have got into any water? If he's breathed some of it in, it could explain his breathing.

poor lad, if he isn't used to it, half an hour flat out running will have been too much. hope he isn't too bad tomorrow. Mine took off today after deer, she came back after a couple of whistles thankfully.

I'm not aware of any water in the area but that's not to say there isn't a chance he got into any. He loves water and wouldn't hesitate to go into it. His breathing seems a bit better now.

He hasn't been sick since early this afternoon and he's eaten some cooked chicken and sleeping.

That deer herd has got out of control :( It's flipping huge. I hope your lad is better soon. It sounds like pure exhaustion.

There's a lot of standing water in the bit near the weird monument thing, purely from the rain. I can't think of a lake or pond there.

Is it wrong that I'd love to know where the culled deer are destined for? :o

Hope he picks up soon and sorry if my comment came as judgemental, I was tired and hungry and running out the door so thanks for taking it with good grace.

My older dog, also a GSD, pee'd off on me in thick woodland two years ago, he was gone for a similar amount of time, it was my Mum's birthday and I called her out to search the forest with me, I was NOT popular, when hefinally came back his sides were heaving and he was a tad lame but recovered in about half an hour or so, thank goodness. That was one of about three ******ing off incidents in a short period and up until then I had worked really hard on his recall and he was 100% or so I thought, so now, unless I can see for miles around, no offleading for him in the woods! There's too much of a risk with roads and livestock.

As you say, dogs with drive will run until they drop, hang onto prey until they suffocate etc and that drive can over-ride even the best of training.

No problem CaveCanem.

Dog has been back to vet this evening and his temperature is nearly normal. OH said everyone at the vets were in hysterics as the dog didn't want to go in and he had to drag him in.

He was still quite subdued this morning so we haven't walked him today. He seems much brighter this evening so I will take him for a short walk (on the lead) tomorrow.
