I have a 14 year old maiden TB mare. She is out of a strong gale mare that was £34K guineas as an unbroken store at doncaster by mister confusion. She has an excellent temperament but is very sharp - always 3 steps ahead and could have been difficult in the wrong hands. She never does anything nasty but I think crossed with the wrong stallion and the progeny could be a nightmare! She is nicely put together, if I was going to fault her, she polishes behing and is weak through her 2nd thigh but I thik this is more to do with the start she had (long story!) than any conformation faults. Any suggestions what to put her to?

what do you want the foal to be? Are you selling the foal/youngster? what market would you aim him/her at?

Or is it for you? What do you do? hack? event? dressage etc? More Q's than answers at this point m'dear!

I am hoping to breed for myself - biasd towards tbs because thats about all I've worked with/ridden and had all my life. Would hope to breed an event type that moved well enough to do dressage. If it was good enough I might be tempted to pt 2 pt it as I did with my mare as a 5 year old and if it was full tb
 
hoping to breed an event type for myself that would also do dressage. Am open minded about stallion breed but biasd towards tb because thats what I've always had/worked with etc. Someone suggested josr algarhoud? Any other suggestions?

When Mr C retired from racing his owner sent him to our stud. He was rather wild shall we say. I think I have his stud card somewhere if you want me to copy it and email you it. That will have been one of his first coverings. Out of interest where did you buy her? He only kept his horses with us for a few months once the foals had been born. He couldnt pay his livery bills so moved up Masham way? So your girl might have been born on our yard as I remember a few were but when he left we l.ost track of all the horses.

further to my post, if she's very sharp i'd actually steer away from cavalier royale and primitive rising lines, though they are excellent horses, very capable and known for producing quality eventing stock, their lines are known to be a little querky in themselves! one more tiger and revolution lines may be a better cross?

ohh no all the josr sired horses i've met have been cows!! what about royaldik, lots of tb blood. im using him on my kings theatre mare this yer!! got a lovely temperament tooooo

Thankyou to everyone for all your replies, I will have to get pictures up so you can all be very critical and recommend sires or say breeding from her is a complete no no! Nobody has to worry about being derogatry I am very critical myself and would rather have an honest answer. I do sometimes wonder if buying a weaned foal is the cheaper option, but then worry about mare temperament and wonder if everyone would be as fussy as they should be before they breed from their mare. Any way I did really like wish upon a star at aston le walls BE event last year when I saw him competing but my friend has a trakhener and his temperament is shocking when you ride him and I've heard a lot of them can be like that so that would probably rule him out?
 
If breeding for racing the rule is never buy progeny of mare which has not won a race. The Strong Gale link is too far back to make it a good pedigree.
A fault in conformation, a 14 year old maiden, I would forget the whole idea, in racing £34K is nothing special, I have ridden horses which went through the sales at £140K (1998 prices), later sold on for about £2K to point, nice conformation, just too slow.
The Sheiks and the Irish breed thousands every year using all the best stallions in the world, and still can't guarantee a winner.
don't try to breed an eventer, buy a good five year old, using all the money you save from this mare.
If you are keen on TB's and don't want a world beater, you can buy a TB from the Doncaster sales, there are always a few nice types that are just a bit too slow for racing.
I was at Doncaster a few years ago, there was a real nice Strong Gale pedigree with good line from both sides, it was a homebred, and went for less than £5K, untried (never been in training) a really nice type, all ready to work, and a bargain.

Thankyou, I would love to see the stud card. The mare was called Italian princess and she would visit Mr C with another mare called another chapter. The mare was foaled in ireland to catch her in foal heat and cover her with roselier, so she did not foal with you. Was he a nicely put together stallion? I assume that his temperament must have been good judging by my mares? Do you have any TB stallions standing at the moment?

Well he was fresh off the race course so quite hyper as he would be. I remember the name Italian Princess. Mr C won the magnet cup he was a fine horse. The stud closed down just after they all left so no stallions I am afraid.

p.s. I would love to see some pics.
 
Don't apologise I have thought about doing what you suggest and am on the forum to weigh up all the options and hopefully pick the best one after hearing what everyone else has to say on the matter. I agree with you about the winning a race thing, racing the progeny would not be the only reason for me breeding so that would not rule the plan out. I do not think she has any conformation faults and does not polish in all paces and because a fault - very hard to explain! I will get round to post a photo online so you can all be as critical as you like after seeing her! Which reasonbly priced tb stallions do you rate at the moment?

Your mare is reg with BE but has not comp record? It is up to you, but I saw a very nice ex racer & at 7 £500 was dirt cheap. No issues to handle etc, just too many of them around.
 
was registered a few years ago but I tried to enter at 6 different places and got balloted out of all of them - it was a very wet summer. I got so sick of the whole process I gave up and have just been doing unaffiliated stuff since.

i love that revolution, he has a superb trot, and his son looks lovely too, shows he passes it on

if you want to breed for yourself, why not, follow your dream, you only live once, i as far as know!, don't get bogged down by other people's negativity, your mare must be special to you if are thinking of breeding from her, and at 14 she is well within maiden foaling capabilities.
