Am looking at a lovely filly and would really welcome your advice. She is really well bred (going back to Voltaire) and seller is letting her go cheap cause of proud flesh scarring on her hind leg on the inside below the hock. It was caused by an accident last November involving a gate and it has completely healed but left her with scar tissue. I have yet to see her but he says it is apparent when you look closely and it was severe enough to displace the chestnut on her leg, so that it moved up a little. While I know this is a blemish do you think it can cause soundness problems later on - it's just scar tissue, right? In which case it shouldn't flare up if she hits it, inhibit her performance or curtail her career?? Do you think it would really go against her if I had to sell her on at some future stage? Love to hear your take on this.

I would view and see where it is - as in, is it likely to affect the joint at all? Vet if you would anyway. At the end of the day, if she's young it's likely to reduce quite a bit over time and, unless you want to show I wouldn't have thought it would cause any issue if no tendons/ligaments etc were involved.

Thanks .....As she is located pretty far away I really wanted to find out a bit more about proud flesh like if anybody has a horse that has old scarring from it - before viewing her. No matter how cheap she is I want a sound horse so I was asking really based on people's experiences. Is old scar tissue from proud flesh simply that - an unsightly blemish or is it something that flares up again.

I would definitely view, but go with eyes open - I would also have it thoroughly looked at by good vet. The horse might be cheap but doesn't mean vets bills will be later down the line! If it doesn't affect joint/tendon movement then it shouldn't bother the horse too much, I am aware of a horse who is very competitive at 3* with a fair degree of scar tissue above the hind fetlock.

Definitely go and see, I have a fabulous 2 yr old SJ bred filly who get entangled in a fence and I think she will be left with this on front of hock yet she has had top vet treatment including x rays and they are confident it is only cosmetic with no lasting effect. You might get a great deal.

Thanks ladyt25, that's more or less what I thought. She is only three and it happened when she was two. I think the owner is a bit of a perfectionist and basically confessed that he lost all interest when she got scarred as felt she would never now make a serious competition horse as nobody would want her with a scar. But if she is talented and the scar isn't too obvious who really cares. Will check that out about the joints and ligaments and thought of also talking to the vet who treated her.

Thanks everyone, and that's a good point about the vet bills down the line. Really feel she could be a bargain, what do I care if there's a bit of a scar if there's a lot of great ability.
