Hello all
I have seen a 2 year old for sale that I like the look of - native cob x . Currently 13.1 to make ??
However not what I thought I wanted.
Is a mare - I wanted a gelding as only had geldings.
Is a Native x cob - I wanted a Sec D
No breeding but prob NF x - not sure about PSSM?
Avail now - I was not planning on another for a year or two.
I have not seen in The flesh - only photos / videos but I really really like her. Would have to buy without viewing.
I know height partic on mixed breed is a gamble but if 13.1 at 2 what is the min adult height - I need a min of 14hh
Is stocky - does not look a gangly 2 year old - more like a 4 year old…
Not much money so no real risk there but I would never sell on so my decision may be with me 30 years!
Long term would be my next riding horse - never had a youngster but will have pro help so not a concern.
I am a happy hacker and prefer quiet pony types.
Have own land and could do with another to keep my current riding horse company/ eat the abundant grass but could get a rescue.
Now it is writtten down cannot see why not …..
Any input gratefully received

That type is going to need restricted grazing so that part of your plan is probably not going to work. I would have thought 14hh should be achievable. I think we need pics though...

Here are (some of) the reasons why not-

It's not what you were wanting
Yes it might have pssm
Very difficult to know what a 2 year of uncertain parentage will be like as a ridden horse
You haven't actually seen or met it
A well built 2 year old might not grow on to make 14 h
you say you won't sell on so you are taking this on for life, whatever it turns out like
If you want a quiet reliable pony, you may have a lively youngster on your hands for several years
Not all young horses turn out rideable due to various physical issues (and are you having it vetted?)

If your heart is really saying you must buy it, at least go in with your eyes open.

I bought my pony as a weanling to make 14.2. He is a cob x appaloosa. He was 13hh as a 2 year old and is 13.1 now as a 3 year old. He looked quite mature as a 2 year old - he’s a stocky sort and has always grown nice and evenly. So similar sort of situation to you, but a year ahead. I’m expecting him to mature at 13.2 and am debating whether to sell as I don’t know whether I am too big to ride him. It’s a shame as he is the ultimate dude and will be such a fun pony.

In your situation I wouldn’t buy as it’s horrid to get attached and then having to be in the situation of possibly selling

Do NOT buy this pony without a negative PSSM test. Just don't. Its never ever worth it.

And only buy her if 13.2hh would be ok for you, because the ones you want to grow never do! Mine was 13.3hh at 2 and made 14.1hh by 6!

i’d definitely view or at the very least vet and test for pssm first, but i bought a welsh mare when i actually wanted a wpb or connemara gelding, absolute opposite of what i wanted but she’s absolutely my heart horse🥰 then said i’d get a gelding, ended up with a 2nd mare who i adore🤣 so definitely don’t discount her on that part!

I bought 13.0 hand Fell pony 2yo who spent the next 30 years still being 13.0 hands.
I bought a 2yo filly who was about 14.3 at that time and she never made it past roughly 15-ish (I never measured her though). OP, you sound too excited to me. Your description of her sounds nice to me, but it doesn't sound like it's at all right for you.

Yes it's not much money to lose if she doesn't turn out to be what you want if you only consider her purchase price..... BUT if you won't sell on then it's a huge amount of money you are risking when you consider her keep and vets bills for 30 years!

I'm not saying don't buy her if you love her, only saying meet her and vet her first ☺️

I'm in Scotland, my horses came from Dorset and Devon. I drive down one day, sleep over, view and drive back up if short of time. It's a hard couple of days but a small investment in time when considered over the course of a 30 year lifespan (I too never sell on)

As above, I wouldn't bet on her making much more height wise, she may grow- equally she may not, or not much. I bought a 13.3 2yo, she's now 14.1 in her shoes at 6 (or was the last time I measured her, but I'm pretty sure she hasn't grown since then!).
That's fine if she will do at her current height and you'd just  like her bigger, but a problem if she's definitely too small now, especially if you dont want to sell her on.

Are you sure she is 13.1 for starters or is someone just guessing? This pony sounds like something I might buy with the thought I could always sell on but if intending to keep for life you need to at the very least meet her. Just because you have fallen for her in pictures doesn't mean you will in the flesh.

VERY good point. i've only ever had one horse be the height it was supposed to be when I viewed it1

Definitely check the height. It may be a guess. My youngster is a full cob and has just turned 2. He's just touching 13.1 just now. I'd expect him to get to 14hh at least. If he was crossed with a New Forest I'd maybe question him getting to 14hh, or if he'd been 2 at the start of the year as opposed to late Summer.

I think walking away is the right decision. I had a Welsh x Cob pony who sadly didn't grow much at all between 2-4. She was 13.1 at 4.5 years old and not big enough for me. I wouldn't risk it again personally.

I wouldn't give up on him yet. My youngest mare (turned five this year) was stuck at 13.1hh for a couple of years, and I was sure would get no taller. She suddenly started growing this spring and has just reached 14.2hh.
