So far this winter I haven't clipped my youngster as he hasn't got the thickest coat and is still growing and so also hasn't got a lot of meat on his bones as anytime he puts a bit of weight on he shoots up again!! (I brought him in Sept standing at 16.3 and he is about 17.1 now!!) I'm not too worried about his weight as on plenty of feed and hay and think once the spring grass comes through he will fill out nicely but would not want to see him anyless covered than he is now...basically he is a gangly youngster!! I had a jump lesson last week and he sweated up really badly, my instructor said i must clip him as he will only drop more weight through sweating which I totally understand. Mentioned it to my dressage trainer who said not to clip as he will feel the cold (he already wears several rugs!) and drop weight!! He only seems to sweat up when in a jump lesson as obviously that is when he works hardest but we are only having lessons every other week at the mo due to his age and fitness. I'm also worried he will look very scrawny clipped!!

I was thinking maybe just do a trace clip? Or should i just leave him and accept he will sweat up in our jump lessons?
Here is a pic from a few weeks ago but he still looks about the same condition wise but is a bit hairier!

IMO weight wise he's perfect, he's a credit to you, you don't want anymore or less on him, with regard to clipping, personally if he's likely to drop weight through stressing from cold then he'll have more of these days than he'll have jumping days if you get my meaning!! He'll start moulting soon enough anyway, so personally I'd leave it, or just do a bib clip, although doing that now will likely result in it showing through in his summer coat, but that's just aesthetics! I'd get a good electrosalts and add that to his feed or water after your jumping sessions to ensure he doesn't loose any of his vital levels etc.

We have given some of our youngsters a bib clip as they were sweating a bit when working (approx 3 - 4 days per week).
