Ethel had the dentist last Thursday and it didn't go particuarly well. It was the first time since I've owned her that she'd had her teeth done and I don't think she had them done before I got her.
Anyway, she had the sharp bits of her uppers taken off and that was it as when dentist tried to put the gag on her she wouldn't settle and was on the verge of rearing up. He took it off as he was concerned that she would go up and over and as she has done it before (obviously under different cirumstances) I didn't want to risk it either. Dentist said she'll be okay for now but he won't be back in the area for another six months so my question is do I wait the six months to get her seen again or get the dentist I know can do it much sooner to do her and get her sedated before hand (other dentist recommended a gel that wasn't sedalin but I can't remember the name) I don't think she'll be able to be done properly without sedation and I'd rather have her sedated than hurt herself. Is there any point in getting a different one out or would you just wait for now?

I would get a different dentist. Assuming that she didn't hurt herself or the dentist then she won't have any lasting bad memories from it and is more likely to get used to it if it's done sooner rather than waiting the 6mths.If she had sharp edges on the top then I would have thought she would also have them on the bottom set of teeth too.
Where abouts are you? I recently had Tanith Easterling out who covers Kent and she was brilliant with my horse who in the past hasn't been the easiest to do. With Tanith he relaxed and allowed his teeth to be done without any difficulty whatsoever.

I'm just outside of Maidstone. The dentist was very kind to her and she didn't have a bad experience, just really didn't like it. Would you say to try again without sedation or get her sedated?

If the dentisit did his job properly and it was just your horse's reaction to being done I would stick with him but sedate next time. I had my mare sedated the very first time a dentist rather than a vet did her teeth. She's was fine and has never needed sedating since.
