Hi all! My horse got PTS last year and i placed an ad looking for someone who needed help excercising thier horse. As it turned out loads of people replied and i now ride for two lovely people and thier wonderful horses! Both are youngsters but have bags of potential.

I had spoke about taking one to a show and his owner said she will insure him first. She had also said she had tried to insure me so that i would be covered if i fell off ( i said if i fall off it'l be my own blooming fault :p)

Then i began to wonder if I can get insurance for the horse not being thier owner. As thier not mine i worry about if they get injured whilst im riding them - or if they injured a third party while im on them.

I see EandL do a "horse rider" cover for someone who doesnt have thier own horse, its on £40 a year

Anyone else in the same boat? Should i do it?

Thanks!

I wouldn't go with E&L based on their reputation, but if you join the BHS as a gold member you get 3rd party rider's insurance and they have a legal helpline among other benefits.

You're very lucky to have 2 good horses to ride and compete :)

Yeah i suppose your right about e&l my cats insured with them, and they took forever to pay out for him when he was sick.

does BHS also cover emergancy vets fees and my injuries? ( not that im planning on having any :p)

Yes i know, im so gratful to have such wonderful babies to ride, :o

BHS is 3rd party liability and personal accident cover. don't think it would coevr vets fees of the horse.

I think Petplan may also do rider cover?

If remember correctly, you can't insure a horse unless you are the owner or keeper ie a loaner. You can insure yourself against claims for accidents you or the horse might cause which is public liability but it won't pay out for vet bills.

How about offering to pay the vets fees element of insurance to the owners? TBH, every horse owner should have their horses covered for PL anyway and you could just offer to "upgrade" their insurance.......

E & L have been subject of more adverse posts than any other company of any kind on this forum. I know that various vets around our area consider you as uninsured if you give covered by E & L. Based on that choose any other insurer. ;)
