Should I go to A&E or would I be wasting their time?

This has been bugging me for a few weeks - so I feel off around 3 weeks ago, and didn't do much damage, but outside of my hand was a bit sore

Its got worse and is now very annoying, really stupid things, like I had a few meetings and people with strong hand shakes nearly had me on the floor in pain as crushed outside of my hand

I have managed to play polo, polocrosse and tent peg once for each discipline. In all I strapped my hand up and fortunately they don't tend to use outside of the hand. However all of these activities weren't exactly hand friendly

So should I go to A&E? This would be to check its ok and toddle off to the private physio to get it sorted

Know of someone who had very similar symptoms and turns out they'd snapped the bone in the side of their hand - they knocked it on the saddle in a jump off!

I would gte it Xrayed tbh. I know of someone that broke a bone in their hand, didnt have it treated and lost the side of their hand as a result...!! Extreme case, but definitely worth getting it checked to make sure everything is straight :)

I had a similar thing happen to me, except I fell over on concrete and bore the full weight of the impact on my right knee, grabbed at something with my hand too and hurt that. Knee was crippled so got it X Raued but came back clear. Few weeks later knee was fine but hand was still extremely painful, so went to the Drs who booked me in for an X Ray. It came back clear too, clearly I'm just a wuss! :D

Anyway, why not go to the Drs, that way you're likely to get an appointment for an X Ray rather than waiting in A&E for hours.

I'd ring up A&E and try and get them to tell me when they're quietest and pop in then! Better safe than sorry. I came off just over three years ago and 'sprained' my wrist, I cracked teeth in same fall and decided to get them looked at and not the wrist, wrist still hurts today!

Pretty sure it would be fine if i'd had it looked at!

Nooo don't tell me things like that

If it makes you feel any better, my housemate has broken his hand twice and twice cut off the plaster to play rugby with no I'll affects. He is currently walking round with a finger that sticks out at right angles to his hand due to not wanting to miss the rest of the season from surgery to re-break the finger and re-attach tendons and ligaments  he straps it up and cope fine playing rugby games with it! :D

Go to A&E! It's better to be safe than sorry! If something is broke nyou don't want it healing incorrectly. People go for alot less and it's there to be used so take full advantage of it!

I hope it gets better soon... big hugs xx

A&E is generally for injuries caused in last 24 hours or so.

You probably need to see your GP and get a referral from him. Often it's just a letter you take with you to A&E.

This is correct, A&E is for injuries that have happened within a short time frame. If your injury happened 3 weeks ago, it should be seen by your GP, who will give you a referral or X ray request and you can go to the hospital department from there.
Hope you recover soon.

Go and get it checked out..I didnt, then when i did the consultant made the wrong diagnosis, now im one finger less.
Always pays to get things checked out..............my lesson learnt the hard way.

Do you have a minor injuries clinc near you? I think that would be the best bet as they will have a much quicker turn around so less waiting time and they will specialise in minor breaks such as hands, feet etc

I probably wouldn't bother, particularly if you have been able to ride.

However, if you do want to get it checked I would get an appointment with your GP instead of A&E.

GP who can refer you if he thinks its necessary.

A&E is for more recent injuries.

Hope you find out that nothing is wrong and it starts to heal/feel better soon.

My friends horse fell on me going around a corner, toes hurt a bit but didnt bother going to get them checked out (my mum`s a nurse) plus i could still ride more or less pain free.
6 months later i`m in hospital having an operation to put a pin through my foot and toes due to me not bothering to check my foot out in the first place. I now cant bend my big toe as the bone has fused together and I`ve still got bone sticking out of the bottom of the toe.

Go to you doc and get an appointment, i ve broken my hand before and it hardly caused any discomfort was just bruised.

Yes, go!

When I was at PC Camp, mucking out my stable, the horse caught his headcollar on the door and panicked, I went to undo him, but he crushed my hand against the door. I had it 'sprayed' with ice stuff, but that was it. I did XC, SJ, Polo, and all stables chores with it (hurting - alot!). Went to A&E the day after PC camp finished, and found my hand was badly broken. Had to have a cast on for my holiday, and it mean't no swimming in the pool. :(

Well that was pointless!

Nearest A&E is minor injuries and they were happy to see me despite the 3 week lag.

So 3 hours later - xray and bones are good, but tendons iffy. I was the only person in there for most of it, but hospital was having lunch and conveniently testing backup generator requiring multiple computer rebooting of slow PC's!

However they did point out I couldn't touch thumb to little finger or close little finger, so wouldn't let me go after I decided I wanted to escape...

Physio next - do they do shockwave for humans??

Go and see your GP. I waited for 3 weeks to have my arm seen to after falling off my big lad at PC camp earlier this year. Turns out I had broken and cracked my radius. Was in plaster for 6 weeks and a splint for 3 weeks. Still have the odd pain here and there now, I'm 14 so my bones should have healed quickly, shame my arm thought differently! No harm in going to have it checked out. Had I had my arm checked out sooner maybe I wouldn't have been in a splint for so long etc.

Vibes to you. :)

Sorry posted before reading your response. x
