Should i go to a&e? (very pathetic post!)

Ok first things first, I have zero pain tolerance and also am a serious hypochondriac.

Anyway at about 4.30pm, a new horse arrived at work. It was very bolshy and nervous, and when I was putting a rug on it, it stomped on my foot and stood there for a moment with it's full weight on me until I managed to elbow it in the right place and get it off.

Now as always when a horse treads on you, it's the most god forbidden awful pain but from what I remember (it's been a while...) it wears off pretty quick too?

I'm still in a lot of pain, a sort of pins and needle + throbbing pain, it hurts to walk and REALLY hurts when my wellie hits the top of it. It's a very warm kind of pain as well, if I were a horse there would be serious heat ;) i don't dare to touch it.

I can move my toes but it hurts to do so. There's a very red bruise already and nice horseshoe indents too. Its pretty swollen as well.

I'm just wondering if it's worth a trip to a&e to check I haven't fractured anything? I don't want to inflict my horrid feet (especially straight after an 11 hour day!) on some poor unsuspecting nurse unless there's good reason! But again, don't want to find I get up tomorrow and unable to walk because I've got a broken foot and have to call in to work 5 minutes before I'm meant to start!

It's the top bit of my foot by the way, not the toe area.
 
If you're worried, then I'd say yes, go. I walked around for a week on a broken ankle being "manly"; it was only when it went black and crunchy that someone made me go.
 
I would go to a&e, I had a fracture in my toe and it felt similar to what you described. I had the bad pins and needles and it really hurt if I touched it/put weight on it, :o better to get it checked out than to leave it :)
 
It is easy to walk around on a cracked bone , I've done it myself and left it until I was crawling with pain the next day. You will soon know it will start to swell up so I hope the wellie is off.

I would elevate, frozen peas and see how you are in a couple of hours. If it is agony and swelling or toes etc are going blue then yes I'd go. Must be said that as an ex nurse I'm not good to ask as hubby has found out because I don't get excited unless it's serious.

I don't get grossed out easily, but the 'black and crunchy' bit made me feel faint haha!!

No advise I'm afraid OP, I hope you feel better soon! I know how painful a stepped on foot is!
 
Exactly the same thing happened to me, and went to see the doctor after the bruise hadn't disappeared after 3 months! It turned out that I had broken a very small bone in my foot :o

Also your employer should be making sure you wear steel toecaps. There was a case where someone damaged their foot and claimed a lot of compensation because his employer didnt insist
 
I would go just to be on the safe side, they'll x ray it to find out if its broken, otherwise it's just ice to reduce the swelling and keep it elevated :) ouchy tho!

Think I'm just gonna go, wouldn't be popular with my boss if i decide in the morning that need to go to a&e whereas I could just go and make sure its ok now :)
 
Easy way to see if its fractured, as opposed to just very sore & bruised is to hop on it. If you get a bolt of pure agony that shoots up your leg, its probably broken. If not, I'd just stick an ice pack on till tomorrow. Most foot fractures aren't treated anyway, they just x-ray, confirm its broke & tell you to rest it.
 
It's probably less embarrassing to get it checked out now, than in a weeks time when it is even more swollen and sort of 'explodes' down the side of your big toe. Especially if you then try and glue it back together yourself with superglue and steristrips before finally being physically taken to the hospital.

Not that I've ever done that, of course :eek: :rolleyes: :o
 
I'm a nurse - go to A&E!! sounds like a break to me... the pins and needles are usually due to the swelling affecting the blood supply x
 
Let us know how you get on at A&E!

You are very good, I always pull my foot away when stepped on which is the wrong thing to do :o
 
Rhino - that sounds horrendous! Couldn't help but lol though.

Fortunately it's just very bruised - (or unfortunately as would of been the perfect excuse not to finish the last week of my notice at work LOL) - but was EXTREMELY impressed with the service, literially 10 minutes after getting there I was seen by the nurse, didn't have to wait at all fr x-rays or doctor, we were in and out within half an hour!

He just said to rest it for 24 hours, and I said I couldn't really because of work (can't call in sick as would just leave 1 person on own, it's a tough week anyway as no part time people can work and boss has just had a baby) (hoping he would write me a note..) but all he said was it would be very painful which was rather charming.

However it doubled in size between me writing this post and getting to hospital, I'm going to have a very impressive bruise!
 
Wow, i am impressed with the service!!! I must admit I walked around with 7 hairline cracks to my pelvis before they were found. Kept going to the hospital but I was sent away 3 times being told I was badly bruised!!

i would go a+e, i walked around for 3 months with a compressed fracture of my spine..was only when the pain didnt go after 3 months that i went for an x ray. Theres no harm in going, even if it is purely for your peace of mind :)
 
It sounds like there is a good chance it's broken however what I've been told by A&E docs in the past is to press up on the bottom of the foot, in the arch area and if that hurts it needs checked, if that doesn't make it hurt more/is painful then it's unlikely to be broken :)
 
Ah the old a&e dilema!


I always feel a bit guilty going after a horse related incident. Think there must be lots of horsey peeps in my neck of the woods as usually met with lots of eye rolling and comments on how often they see horse riders in a&e .... most common type of visitor I'm told :D


You can't win though. My most recent incident was Lockie stepping on my leg after a rather spectacular team chasing breakdown of partnership. This happened on the Sun morning and of course my leg swelled massively - well it would do with half tonne of horse stepping on it wouldn't it?! Didn't like to bother the docs so didn't go to a&e until Monday evening by which time it was twice the size and wasn't really able to bear much weight on it. You've guessed it - got *******ed for not going in on the Sunday!! :D
