Hello everyone I have a 14.3 cob called kobi and He’s a skewbald and a thick set lad, I have decided (I think) to hog my lad however I’m not sure if it would suit him ? If anyone could give me some information or help it would be greatly appreciated x
OH no! Lovely silver mane, so pretty and soft. It's not like he has a wild, unruly, overly thick bottle brush type mane. However, that is just my opinion.
I think it would suit him but he is not overly chunky or hairy so would look equally smart pulled a little shorter and plaited if you are going out to competitions, if you do hog it can grow back much tougher and courser so be absolutely certain as you risk losing the quality hair he has now.
It’s a hard decision what to do with his mane as it is so thick training it over the other side is incredibly hard and he has what looks like a double mane ?? In such a pickle as don’t know what’s best thank you for the help ?
I’m a massive fan of hogging, mostly because I hate plaiting ?
I do think it makes them look really smart, but for the first time I wouldn’t! He’s got an absolutely gorgeous mane
I would not hog a white necked horse in summer, they could burn and flies will be a pain. As for if he would suit it or not, I think he would but I also like his silky mane. Once you hog that’s it until it grows and you end up with a good year of a Mohawk lol
I'm the wrong person to ask as I really do not like hogging, but absolutely definitely not this one, it would be an absolute crime to hog him.
He is gorgeous and he also rocks a daisy chain
There are reasons for hogging a cob and these are the two main ones I've hogged for (apart from appearance and/or sheer convenience):
- Horse with sweet itch where it was much easier to apply topical lotions & potions and keep the area cool under a sweet-itch rug
- Horse (my current mare) who had a huge mop of Afro-style fuzzy mane which was making her very hot underneath; ditto very heavy feathers. So while vet was here sedating for teeth, off everything came! Best job ever done IMO.
However.. I did hogg my little youngster (trad cob) last autumn for a fun ride - and whilst it did keep her cool for the ride which was on a hot day, she really DOES look much nicer in her traditional plumage! I'm waiting for her mane to re-grow right now but it will be a while before it gets back to its original length.
I think OP that your lovely cob is fine as he is; personally I wouldn't be in a rush to hogg him, especially now the height of the summer is still ahead of us. He will be better with his mane and forelock to guard against flies; and as someone else has said, some protection against the sun too!
If you are hunting come the autumn then mmmm I might just consider hogging, but probably not even so!
My Mare has a thick mane that falls the wrong side, my daughter is a dab hand with a pair of thinning scissors and takes out the middle of her mane then can plait it on the correct side, she also has feathers but will not let us clip them, brushing them not a problem but you cannot go near them with clippers or scissors! This is her plaited up
I hogged mine because she has a very very thick mane and each individual hair is thick too so it was just a huge mass a of wirey, horrible to touch hair. She didn't like it being handled at all, never mind pulled or even backcombed to trim. If you caught a hair or two in the reins while riding she got upset! Poor sensitive soul that she is. So off it came. I did check opinion on here first about how it would look! ? It just so happens to suit her much much better plus is so easy for me.
