well my freind galloped my Tb last night 1st away from us he was just cantering then galloped flat out back to us...she has no issues what so ever with brakes and she never once had to pull his head off...

my prob is everytime iv just bitten the bullet and asked for it i have been unable to stop for a long time or came off him....

i have galloped a few times with sucess very slowly though not flat out and always going walk, trot canter then gallop never just told him to go....

so should i just bite the bullet at tell him to go?

the thing im scared of really is the speed because he will no doubt go as fast as he can stright away and tht un nerves me a little but im guessing once i do it and get comfortable with the speed ill be ok...but its taking that initial bullet!!

ahhh

so excited to try it as i want to feel that speed so badly (as have times before but not when i have asked....)

:(

What a out hiring a purpose built gallop if there's anything local to you rather than field or bridleway if it helps you feel safer??

oh thats a brilliant idea!

ill have to have a look had a quick look at kelsall but it goes up and down hill and if i cnt pull up intime downhill loks pretty scary lol

:)

going sommerford in a few months :)

Are you doing this out on a hack?

Mine always likes to tank off, i let him have a couple of strides then bring him back to a nice canter. i very rarely let him continue in the flat out gallop as he has a tendancy to spook easily!

Also i NEVER turn him back towards home and ask for a canter, he will tank off, i won't be able to stop him safely and i'm asking for trouble.

I agree gallops are a good idea for a safe leg stretch

The downhills can be scary if you have no brakes but you'll be grateful of the uphill because it will give you a chance to gather your tb back together and get him under control.

I would say better to use the uphill / downhill gallop than risk being out of control in the middle of a field!

Agreed - never canter towards home. Even if it works out ok the first time, the next time you're out and want to walk home, your horse will think he knows better and take off.

Good luck.

Nothing feels better than a good gallop (providing you're in control of course!)!!!

aw thanks for the replys guys :)

looking forward to the gallops now i will defo shut my eyes on the way down lol!

hes brillaint cantering/galloping away from home if you go towards home he gets very fast....same if its to a bunch of other horses although hes very nappy and i know hell stop once he gets to them so im ok with that lol!

ill stick with galloping away from home.... i ussually only ever trot back home and have a canter on a feild near by then walk the rest of the way :)
