Bad experience last weekend with an owner asking me to put an escaped pony back into a field, pony had been chased out by other horses in much too small field surrounded by barbed wire fencing. Pony cut his legs, stomach and groin area escaping and owner wouldn't come see him because he wasn't her horse she was just looking after for a friend who also wasn't bothered about checking him. Poor mite is 2 years old and nervous enough! I did all I could for him, took pictures of all wounds to send to woman looking after him so she coudl see all injuries as she wouldn't come to see him. When I messaged the next day to ask how he was owner said she walked him back to his owner because he's too much trouble and complained about how much it would cost to replace fencing posts.

They had 2 15hh horses and 2 14hh youngsters in a field about 40x40m and she'd seen the large horse chasing this new youngster around previously.

I have his owner on facebook there's been nothing put up about him and she's now gone away for an 8 week holiday, am I wrong to message and ask how he is? Or should I mind my own business? I'm backing off from the woman looking after him as my partner wasn't happy with how the horses were acting when I was in the field and doesn't feel I'm safe to go there alone which I agree with. I have previously ridden one of her horses but now feel I might be better going for lessons or finding another share locally. I'd like to know the youngster is ok and the cuts weren't too bad.

I'm really sorry I cannot make head nor tail of this post.
How many people own this horse? Was someone else looking after him? Who is the person you want to message?

You found him and rescued him, I think it is legitimate to ask how he is. I don't know how you can convey this to the owner, but if they don't get veterinary treatment to an animal that needs it, it is an offence. If you are worried you can always contact the BHS who will get the local Welfare Officer to go and have a look.

Sorry it's a confusing one to type out there is one owner but they'd passed him on to a lady I help out while they went away. Before they left this all happened so he's gone back to the owner and its them I wanted to message to check he's ok.

FWIW, I did understand your OP. Sometimes it just takes a bit of re-reading to get everything straight in the readers mind, although this time I didn't need to re-read. Sometimes people can't be bothered to do so.

As the owner is already a contact on your FB, I can't see a problem with messaging her but in addition, I would let one of the welfare organisations know. You might need to ask around to find out which organisation is the most effective in your area. Here, I would contact Redwings.

Thanks Pearlsinger and Orangehorse I will definitely do so just didn't want to think I was being over the top with it. I will message owner tonight and look into welfare organisations too!

ok, he is back with the owner who has gone away for 8 weeks

I would imagine that the owner has made arrangements for holiday cover so I would personally leave it

As it stands if you message her you are messaging her knowing full well she is on holiday. I would leave her to enjoy her holiday

It was her friend at fault in your OP, no reason to think that the pony isn't ok and being tended to now

I would leave nothing to chance and contact World Horse Welfare and ask them to send one of their Welfare Officers to check the horse out.

i agree with this^ unless i have missread/missunderstood, why would anyone call a welfare organisation, owner is not at fault and a horse hasnt beeb neglected? the pony moved to a yard temporarily, horse
s didnt accept new pony into herd and it got a few scrapes so went back to old yard, owner of pony is now on holliday

Agree with this. I also don't get why you'd call in a welfare organisation when the pony is back in the care of this owner and not in the situation that caused the injuries. Why do you expect to see an update on the pony on Facebook?

If you are concerned of course message the owner - they can choose to answer you or not - although the OP is confusing it sounds like you are concerned that noone is bothering to check on the wounds...
