my 10yr old French trotter is in constant pain, he has stiff legs is sometimes lame on his back ones. his back and neck are really stiff also and seem to be sore. His belly is very bloated but he's ribs still poke through and he is really underweight. His coat is dull and he just seemes like he has given up. He has had colic in the past but they were never bad. I have had may different vets over from all over the county and non have any idea what is wrong with him. He can't be stabled because it stresses him out and can't be put in a trailer because he freaks out. His value of life is rubbish he hardly leaves the field and separates himself from other horses.

I've made the decision to put him down but is it the right choice? Or is there something else I could do? I love him with all my heart and this is the hardest decision I've had to make in the 13 years of having horses.

I feel for you having to make this decision, it's not easy.
You know your horse better than anyone, and if the vets can't do anything to cure him, or make him comfortable, then it is probably the kindest thing to do.
Quality of life is more important than quantity.
Whatever you decide, I wish you luck, and I'm sure a lot of the peeps on the forum will be thinking of you. x

Sounds like you know what is best for your boy x I wouldn't have my girl in continous pain, if I thought she wasn't mostly happy and comfortable then I would send her to sleep. Sorry this is such a horrid time for you x

So sorry to hear your lad is in a bad way.

You could of been describing my mare, who lost condition and went downhill in a matter of three months:( I made the very sad decision to pts in sept as I didnt want her to suffer or have to face a hard winter.

It is a very hard decision to make, but it's the final kindness you can do for them, take care x

EB - why do you think this is a troll doesn't sound like a troll at all. Sounds like an owner who has trawled the net looking for answers and has come across the forum and joined to get other opinions. Or am I missing something! :(

Think I'm with EB and shys mum... That'll be three of us going to hell then !!

FWIW - I'd have put him down long before he got to the stage he's alleged to be at.

Are you people really being serious right now?? I've posted it on two different threads to try and get as many replies as can. How dare you think I'm making this up! As if anybody would joke about this!!

OP - really intrigued by you now - please can you tell us exactly WHY you have posted this ? Is it cos you are lonely/like attention/have a grudge ?? We have had several dodgy posts recently and it's great entertainment, but - honest question - what DO you get out of it

In response to your last post, I'm sorry but why the hell have you not had a vet out for the last month - as a former Inspector I would be booking you tbh if the horse has deteriorated that much with no veterinary input. And the question of PTS would be taken right out of your hands. There are serious posters here who have serious issues (and sensitive PTS questions). There are posters here who ARE going thru hell.

Hi Jordanna,

I sympathise - but this is a very personal decision. I think it would be very irresponsible for anyone to tell you what to do either way.

I would advise talking to close friends and family about this ( who may have knowledge of your horse and circumstances) rather than trying to seek reassurance on a forum like this.

You and you alone will know what his quality of life is and whether it has significantly declined recently.

It may be that referral to a specialist might help you make that decision, but a diagnosis doesn't necessarily mean that he will be treatable and happier as a result.

It is always a hard decision but we are very privileged with animals (and in this country) to be able to make such a decision and save animals from years of pain and suffering.

I am sure the decision you eventually make will be the right one, however hard.

No please belive me I'm not trolling Ollie is my horse, my responsibility and I'm just trying to find out what other people think about my situation. I'm telling the 100% truth and I don't think you realise how upset the fact that you think I'm making this up is effecting me so please just stop accusing me of lying! I am telling the truth :(

Believe me, people have 'joked' about far, far worse on this very forum. :(

How old are you ? Do you understand how upsetting this will be for some posters to have to read ?

Do you understand how upsetting it will be for the OP if she's not a troll? If someone accused me of being a troll when I was trying to decide to PTS my cat, I would have been absolutely heartbroken.

People are crying troll too often. Leave her alone. If you suspect she is a troll, don't feed it and simply don't reply, because, like I said, if she is not, then you will look heartless.

I hope you're ok OP, sorry I can't be of help :(

Do you not understand what I am trying to explain to you! I'm not lying! My horse has been ill for over a year now but gradually been getting worse. A few vets have said they wanted to take him to an equine hospital but just the scans, transport and stabling while he was there would cost over £3000 and they weren't even sure if the x-rays would reveal any awnsers. So I said no. He has good and bad days and for the past month or so every day has been bad. I haven't called the vet to him because they always have the same results and now I'm thinking of putting his needs before my own. I posted this to find out about other peoples experiences with these things. I'm genuine not some low life idiot that spams the web! So just leave this thread alone so People can post there thoughts on MY situation instead of you idiots upsetting me further!!

Oh dear this has got a bit nasty.......I am not sure i understand what a troll is - is it someone who posts a provocative post? If it is a 'troll' then the OP is defending her corner soundly, which if I was in that situation - I would have probably called it a day several posts ago.
Very sensitive subject - and if the horse was that unwell, then I am not sure I would be posting to everyone.....but I can't resisit asking, has the horse been on bute - which might give those badly shaken trotting limbs some respite?

No problem :) I don't know what is wrong with people at the moment! I haven't seen 'troll' called so many times in a long time!

Stay strong and I'll be thinking of you. I know how hard it is, but you're doing the best thing you can for him. *hugs*
