Should I put my lad down? Please give your opinion.

To those people who think this is a troll.... Why not just leave the thread? Some of you are so negative and miserable, I wouldn't like to be so darn pessimistic that my first thought was 'troll' when somebody posted something like this. Just shows how jaded and bloomin' hard hearted some of you are. No proof of trollery so give her a break, reply to the thread or bog off?

Yes he has been on two sachets per day in the past. They did make a difference but the cost was getting to much and my boy has been bad for a while now so posting on here was my way of giving myself reassurance I was doing the right thing as most my family are not 'horsey' people and thank you for such an honest reply

If you are a troll, I don't care. I will give my opinion of your situation as if it is genuine and if it involves the care of a horse then we should all be willing to help guide others if someone asks for help. It hasn't wasted any of my time and if you are genuine then at least you have had an answer to your query rather than a troll bashing because some people have nothing nice to say! Best of luck to your boy, we can all argue what kind of care you should have given him up until now - point is you are asking should you pts and if he is in pain that is likely to continue then yes it is a sound option x

So sad for you, easy to say as a bystander, but yes, PTS. You will be doing the right thing, the brave thing, and the humane thing. You will find so much kindness and support on here for when it happens. Poor boy, he doesn't need to suffer any longer. Bless you both.

Thank you, I understand that many people don't trust other users on this site now, but I am a genuine girl, and i fully agree Yes I could of scans and many other tests done with vets checking him every other day. maybe it would of made a difference to the outcome but money isn't something I have a lot of and maybe if I had spent all those thousands I wouldn't be sitting crying at a computer screen with my best friends life in my hands :(

Well said nah, totally agree with you. I can see no reason to suspect op is a troll and I feel sorry for her at this already upsetting time :(

Op my mare was also on bute every day and I just couldn't see any quality of life for her, especially as she had always been so full of it, my vet also agreed that it was the right and responsible thing to do. Be strong for your boy, I miss mine every day but know it was the right thing to do and she isn't suffering ny more x

OP, I think you are making the right decision. If your horse has lost his sparkle then its definitely time. Bute him up and spend a few days treating him like a king. Ignore all the bitches on here, hiding behind their computers upsetting others. They really are not worth it xx

I feel for you having to make this decision, it's not easy.
You know your horse better than anyone, and if the vets can't do anything to cure him, or make him comfortable, then it is probably the kindest thing to do.
Quality of life is more important than quantity.
Whatever you decide, I wish you luck, and I'm sure a lot of the peeps on the forum will be thinking of you. x

I agree totally with this. Sounds like you have tried very hard for him with the vets etc. Vets puzzle me sometimes. Am sure your decision is the right one. So easy to give advice. Go with your gut instinct it will be right.

Do you have a trusted person IRL you can talk it through with? A yard owner or instructor perhaps? You kight feel more comfortable in making your decision if you have someone to talk to tha knows your horse. Good luck

Thank you for the support, I'm very thankful for all your kind words. And deep down I know I've made the right decision even though I feel like I lost him a long time ago xx

You want to put your horse first yet you are quibbling about the cost of a few sachets of bute? Bute is hardly expensive.
Your horse has been deteriorating over the last year yet you don't want the vets to investigate properly?
He's been 'bad' everyday for the last month, yet you see fit not to call the vet?
If this is genuine, then sorry but PTS would be the best for this poor horse, he can't suffer anymore then.
If it's a troll post then I for one am deeply offended, having lost my mare. She too had pain in her back caused by inflamation. She developed these symptoms suddenly, with oedema under her belly and the conclusion was that she was suffering from multicentric lymphosarcoma. She was PTS within a week when she failed to pick up to medication.
So, if your horse is ill, then your horse has my sympathies, if it's not, then you disgust me.

Well said, I agree with every word.

I feel for you OP but I am sorry, if my horse had been deteriorating in the way you say yours has over the last month, then a vet would have been called by about the second or third day - I find it incomprehensible that you could leave it as long as a month, yet you say you love him to bits and have watched him do downhill on a daily basis

Have the poor thing PTS, he will be better off.

Didn't OP say that loads of different vets from all over the county have tried to find what's wrong? I got the impression OP has done everything they can for the horse - if I'm right, you are so cruel to post those comments:mad:

You have not read the OPs first post properly - shame on you:mad:

No, shame on the OP. How dare you. I would have moved heaven and earth for my mare, not quibbled over the price of bute. As it was, she gave up eating, no matter what I tried and at the age of 26, I lost my best friend of 22 yrs. I certainly wouldn't have left her for a month getting worse each day. So, the OP had vets from 'all over the country', yet she didn't even get the horse properly examined.
Pretty poor in my opinion.
But it's not the case, I believe this is another troll, but this one ISN'T *******ing FUNNY

Excuse me guys, but can I remind those of you getting so heated that "deteriorating" means "getting worse" NOT "already half dead and dying more each day". I am also deteriorating every day with age but I don't need shooting yet.

There is no evidence whatsoever that this girl is either a troll or that this horse has been left without veterinary care when it was required.

I have not even read all through this thread you have had vet's from all over the country and they cannot find out what is wrong with you horse, and the vet advised pts without full investigation really.

I have just lost a horse the vet did make an error but we all fought tooth and nail to save my girl, I have to say this thread is an insult to anyone trying to treat an ill horse.

I think you are a troll if not you should not be allowed to own a horse in my opinion.

COUNTY, it's COUNTY not country.

At least read the girl's posts before laying into her with your sanctimonious attack.

Oh and congratulations guys, if she IS a troll you've given her just what she wanted.

My horse had the vet out daily, she went from being fine to being dead in less than a week. How dare you write that. I did everything I could for my horse, as did my vet. But she wasn't improving so I made the decision to have her PTS before she started dying.

Me too i'm out, thoroughly disgusted with lhotse.
I didn't realise how utterly heartless some people are - o sorry I just remembered yes there were some people who wrote to the woman who fought cancer by running marathons and competing in iron man challenges and said they didn't believe she had cancer - yes some people can be that heartless  what a sad life you must lead having no empathy:(

The first post is stiff legs and neck bloated belly colic etc vet's called in from all over the country but nobody can give an answer to what is wrong with this horse, in this case where the owner was calling out so many vet's do you not think they may have referred it to an equine hospital or maybe the dick or liverpool uni or liphook or somewhere similar.

Just out of interest to the op what vet's have you consulted.
