Should I stay or go?

Ok, quick background!
Daisy is a mare at the rescue centre who is in foal and it's extremely exciting to us as we obviously never have babies, let alone ones of the horsey variety!

I'm at uni until May, my exams start the last week of April, and foal was originally though to be due in May/June but now it's more likely April which messes up the perfect timing!

My lovely dad has said he will make the 5 hour round trip to get me and take me back home and back the next day if we can get a rough due date, or even the day after it's born if she springs a surprise :p
However it's bang in the middle of revision and will only work if it's before the middle of April.

Pros:
It's a FOAL! :D
It's highly exciting!
It's very likely the only time I'm going to get to see a just born/day old foal.
I can revise in the car

Cons
I'll miss 2 days of revision for my final year exams. (This is the only one I have right now :p)

So, what should I do and how can I further justify this? :p

This is a pointless question, you're gonna go anyway ;):D You're studying animals right, a foal is an animal - therefore it is officially hands on revision being with Daisy and her baby :D:D:D

Oh and, your thread title reminded me of the song 'Should I stay or should I go' even though I knew what the thread was about anyway :p:D

Seeing a foal born is a special thing but you will have other chances hun. You have put so much effort into your degree, you just need to get your head down for the next couple of months :)

Oh - and don't do what I did the night before my degree exams started and 'wake up' on the floor of a stable covered in blood from a head wound unable to see   Not clever! Still not sure exactly what happened

How exciting, I adore foals :D :D

I would decide nearer the time. If your revision is going well you could afford a day out. If not then dont, its not worth ruining your grades.

But hey, I'm a lecturer, I would say that :D :D

I think it would be supremely stupid to distract yourself from a once in a lifetime exam. You can organise to see the foal at any time, spend all your spare time with it. Regardless of the foaling, don't take time away from your finals' revision.

Teacher talking, but I think it would be dumb to miss revision time after what, three years of a degree? I understand how thrillingit would be to see the foaling, but please prioritise what may in fact affect your future.

Revision every time, the foal isn't going anywhere and a lot of mares tend to go over 2 weeks or more, take it from someone who slept in the stable for 2 weeks, the mare waited till I'd gone for a cup of tea and then foaled in 20 minutes, lesson learnt.:):):)

Lol! I like that logic, although I'm pretty certain foalie won't help with the exams :p

Hmmm, a voice of reason, go away! :p
I know I know, but maybe I'll be at the rocking back and forth revision stage and sitting in a car with my notes for 10 hours might help :P
That is definitely not the plan, sounds scary  Did you pass? :D

Deciding nearer the time, that's very rational and probably the best answer :D

*Considers self officially grounded* :p

Well it's meant to be start of April so she's have to be a whole month late :(

you dare even think about it and you can tell your dad I will be a 1 person road block at the Forth Road Bridge to kick yer jacksy right back up to Dunsmellydee! I know you have put tons of work into your degree and deserve the best so don't do anything to jepordise it now. You have the rest of your life to see loads of wee baby cute foalies!!
:p xx

Lol!
But...but what if I'm exceedingly stressed out (which I will be) and if I go away for 2 days (whilst revising ) then come back and feel guilty so I revise even better? :p

Any chance of a camera being borrowed
Sadly mine no longer works--used to sit in bed and watch the sheep lambing on TV and just pop out if help needed

then do what any self respecting student does and get to the pub with 3 mates and order a half pint of snakebite and 4 straws!! If you are that stressed come and visit brooke, not quite a foal but awfy pretty :D xx

Lol!
I will wait and see how revision is going, I definitely won't go if it's after the 2nd week in April, it might even be the end of march and then it'll still be lectures time and I won't have really started revision yet ;)

Smiling at your dilemma ( sp, its late) I have supervised many a foaling from my stud from 25 miles away. Cctv that is linked to the internet is not that expensive these days. If you are really canny I would approach one of these Companies, explain your predicament & make much of the fact you are a Vet just about to take your finals. Offer to either buy or rent the camera with the promise that when you qualify ( as expected) you will write up a full report & allow the Company to use the video stream at any sales exhibitions or on their website. I will be gob smacked if they do not take you up on the offer. We have had 2 cameras & free website use for 3 years on the basis that any of our tecordings can be used for advertising. Go for it.

Great idea but she's not a vet student ;)

I'll buck the trend on this. Make your revision timetable three days shorter than the time available and go. Use the drive to catch up on some extra revision that you hadn't scheduled in to make yourself feel even better. There is no way on God's Earth that you can revise solidily 24/7, brains don't work like that, they need a break and time to absorb, bodies don't work like that, they need time and space to move around and refresh.

Far better to have a break and do something that will lift your spirits than to be sitting in a room with your books not concentrating on what you are doing but thinking about the foaling.

If something disastrous happened or someone died (as is going to happen to my daughter on her run up to finals, she'll lose her last grandparent) and the funeral was arranged during your revision time then you'd take the time out and go. With the foaling you know in advance that you need to alter your schedule so it needn't impinge on your revision time.

Thanks but as Rhino says, I'm a zoology student not a vet!

Thanks ;)
I am bad at taking breaks so I do think it could be helpful, but I will wait and see how revision is going and when exactly she decides to foal :)
Sorry about your relative.

I did a 2 yr day release course for work, & my horse foaled the day before one of my exams. I'd spent the previous few weeks sleeping down the yard in the back of my small car, checking her every 2 hours, & she foaled during the day (at noon), on the day work had given me off to revise. It was fine though as I'd put a lot of work in before that day, I wasn't doing a last minute revision job. Do think very carefully though, there are ways to see foals born (like helping at a stud), your degree is very important & will affect your working life. It may not be what you want to hear, but it is being sensible about it.

It would also be taken into account with the results of the exams though, I'm fairly sure I didn't genuinely earn the grades I did when my mum died (End of Year exams, not finals) ;) so not really a direct comparison IMO.

OP - you know how hard you have been working, and what you want to achieve, but for me the 'what if' of taking time off when it was needed would be worse than the 'what if' of missing the foaling. This is probably the only chance you will have to complete an undergraduate degree and from what I have seen, you stand every chance of doing very well indeed :D

ETA fingers crossed foalie will hang on anyway!
