When we got our pony 3 yrs ago we didn't know his worming history so after discussing this with my local tack shop they came up with a worming program for him. After 2 yrs I checked that it is still the correct program which they confirmed & always have done everytime I ask. So he's been on this program for 3yrs now & have just suggested for this time either to just get the wormer that is due or do a worm count. Those that have read any of my posts will know I've only been 'horsey' for around 10yrs, I've had to learn from a friend (who I no longer see) & from the fab people at PC. so I've never done a worm count & was wondering if it is about time I did one on my little man?? Please don't think I'm a numpty!!! xxx

The only people who are numpties are those who don't bother to ask questions tinap555! I think it would be worth getting a worm count done, yes. Westgate Laboratories or Abbey Diagnostics are two good ones to use. If you start using worm counts then you should be able to reduce how many chemicals your horse has and help stop any further worm resistance building up.

Thanks for that, ill get on some websites today. I've become addicted to this forum as I am learning so much from all the very knowledgeable members!! Really appreciate all advice!! xxx

up with our own accounts with reminders of when to re test.

Im not sure why this has gone over two posts... Silly smart phone!

I started doing worm counts last year. I had a pleasant suprise when Charlie's count came back as low. I now worm when due for bots and tapeworm and then do worm counts in between. I have also consulted abbey diagonitics since the last worm count an am following their reccomemdations as well. It is well worth doing so you know where you are headed with worms. I dont like to over worm as the wormsa can get resistant to to the products used.

Be aware that worm counts don't show tape worm and encysted red worm.

You would usually worm for tape worm in the spring and the autumn and Encysted red worm in the winter. We have just wormed for tape worm and then will worm count in the summer.

Oh, right thanks. Not had a chance to look into it yet. That was my reason for asking as he's due an equimax about now (had an equest beg. of Feb) just seems I'm worming cos the tack shop says this is what I should use & when!!

I would have thought the tack/feed store have worming advisors there? I know they have to have been on a course and be qualified so know that they are talking about. Have you talked to them about worm counting?

You could also ring your vet and ask what their worming program is? I know our vet advises the same as what out feed store does. :)

Yes its the worming advisors I spoke to last time i bought a wormer. They told me to either carry on with what I'm doing or get a worm count done this time. Thought I'd ask you lot on here for your advice though xxx
