Should kids bellowed to wear Beaglers at shows- discuss?

Went to a championship dressage show today and there were a few kids (probably between 10 and 12 years old) wearing Beaglers. It was only for unaff Prelim to Elementary.

If I was a parent I would want my child (especially as you can’t be sure what other people are going to do in a warm-up arena) wearing a properly fitted, secured hat.

What are all your thoughts?

There are some kids who shouldn't be allowed to RIDE at shows far less wear beaglers!!

I think on this one fashion is again playing it's part and TBH despite the fact that you fall off the same from a dressage horse as any other type, dressage divas are less inclined to wear any safety headgear than most other riders.

I definately thing that under16's should be forced into wearing hats to the current saftey standard . Adults can make there own decisions and understand the consequences of falling off without a hat , but i'm not sure a 10year old would understand the full effects ?

No doubt a handful of parent would be quick to sue if something went wrong, so why jeapordise your kids safety in the first place ?

My local EC enforces under 16's have to wear hats to current safety standard at all times

Well to be fair these kids were very good riders, they had qualified for a championship show. However as you said ponies (as well as horses) can be unpredictable, and in a busy warm-up (which it was) there could easily be a mishap. I just can’t believe parents would go for fashion over safety.
Do you think it should be banned?

I think everybody's head important when it comes to safey be it a child or adult, its hard to say on these kind of subjects really because should we as adults set a good example to our younger riders...? or is it double standards...?

I think at competitons such as dressage, its a little more quieter and most horses are usually well behaved (odd exeption no doubt!) but I know how many times I've rattled my brains when falling and banging my head and all I can say is thank god for it being strapped on!

I think everybody should wear approved hats. I cant believe their parents did not get them appropriate headware.

I'm surprised it wasn't in the competition rules that the hats had to meet EN1984/PAS015 standards, which I'm guessing include the harness bit as part of the standard. Very silly kids/parents IMO

Beaglers are not riding wear. it is part of the correct uniform to go beagling in. beagles are followed on foot, hence not riding wear.
it may not be fashionable but a correct hat is a must and my daughter isn't allowed on her pony without it

I always used to wear a beagler when I was showing, and even hunting on my pony back in yesteryear- it was only two years ago shows as big as yorkshire and Lincolnshire stated that ALL rider both child and adult had to wear a proper riding hat whilst mounted.
I think it should be decided by event organisers personally.

i always wear a beagler in dressage but thats only because i trust my horse and i probably couldnt fall off even if i wanted to in my dressage saddle! you are much less likely to fall off doing dressage than showjumping or eventing but it kind of depends on the horse. i agree that the younger kids shouldnt wear them but when you get older its your own responsibility if you decide not to wear a propper hat and take a fall.. it might encourage kids not to wear a hat at home as well which is never good..

Strong feelings on this:

-that a horse has never done anything wrong
- that it is dressage which is 'quiet',
- that a child is a good rider
- even that you have a good saddle

has nothing to do with the unexpected occurrence that can injure or kill someone. It is usually not you, but someone or something outside your control that causes it.

Would parents allow their children to go out in the car without a seat-belt or safety harness just because the car is a top level model, made with all the safety features, and because they (the parents) are good, safe drivers?

I think it should be enforced in all competitions at all levels. Then everyone is on a level playing field and there wont be any problems. The children will just get on with it.

absoloutely not, no matter how well behaved etc. the pony can trip and fall, this applies to all horses, only the stupid think they can defy nature.
