i have a horse that will threaten to kick when strangers go near him when he is tied up, so i just do him in his stable as i would hate for someone to get injured by him (he has never actually kicked anyone he just lifts his leg to threaten/warn people off), my other 2 i tie up outside and do outside
however
if the horse is a known kicker and is tied up outside you would be pretty stupid to go behind it
It depends.
If there is space for people to go around, lead horses past the known kicker, then I don't see a problem.
None of mine are kickers, but I am always amazed when I have them in (tied in the yard) for the farrier, how many people have actually ridden close behind my mare, sometimes bumping her.
And none of them actually know her...

I beleie that it is the owners responsibility to make sure their horse is a safe as possible, in all areas, at all times; and if this means that I horses needs to be groomed and tacked up in it's stable, then so be it.
@ twisteddiamond; for example, if someone is new at your (or anyones, I'm not making your horse an example!) yard, or is young and inexperienced, or is in a hurry, and rushing round not paying much attention, would it be their fault for not knowing/realising the danger the are in? Shouldn't the horse be taking out of such situations to avoid freak accidents as above?
Yes, because they pay for the same facilities as anyone else.
No, because it is a total pain and dangerous to boot. Owners/handlers should exercise a bit of consideration and common sense and there is no excuse at all for not avoiding the situation in the first place if they know the horse wellies at will.
Well In the case you say, No I do not think should have horses tied outside that are known kickers.
I dont mind if there is room to walk past the horse without it being able to kick, its when you are having to faff around when horses are parked in the way of where you need to be and will kick you in the process.
Who in their right minds walks (or rides/leads a horse) within kicking range past either a strange horse, or a kicker?
I think we all have to exert a bit of caution regarding our own health and safety, rather than abdicating responsibility and expecting everyone else to keep us safe.

IMO known kickers should be done safely out of the way of other horses and humans. It is not safe for others if they are known to kick and are tied on the yard, unless there is plenty of space around them.
My pet hate is people taking their horses right behind mine when they don't know what he would do! I know he doesn't kick but I still get him to move flush with the stable when others bring their horses through the barn, common courtesy.
I don't think it makes any difference if they're a known kicker or not. Lead your horse within kicking distance of any horse, and run the risk of a leg being flung........
ive got one, and she is stabled out of reach of any one.. in fact i have the 3 end boxes on the yard to prevent any person or horse going near her.. her front end can be as bad as her back end.
she also only every goes out with my other horse or the yos. as shes as bad to horses as she is humans..
bless her, on a soft day she will share a pint of cider.. in all honestly she is my problem, and although a pussy cat with me, she can border on dangerous and i always let other people know whats shes capable off. i see it as if i take all the precations needed, and some plank wants to risk going near her and does get injured, well its not really my fault.

I agree. Known kicker or not, you should treat all horses with caution - they're all capable of it.
My horse although not a kicker but has the capibility of doing so and have no choice but to tie him up as he can be bloody dangerous if you do things in stable with him.He will only tie to one ring or he gets very upset. I used to turn him out in school as i found it safer for other people especially kids who tend to run round corner and run right into him( but yo stopped this) so yes i think they should be allowed to be tied up
of course they should be allowed to be tied up outside!any horse can kick!obviously the owner should warn ppl taking stupid risks near their horse but at the end of the day people just need to use common sense when they are around strange horses(if you knew a horse kicked im presuming people already have the sense to avoid its backside)
