Taking my daughter and her welsh a pony to their first ridden show in first ridden lead rein class, just watched some clips on u tube of these classes and all the welsh looking ponies were plaited? I thought they were meant to be unplaited.

If your pony is a registered section A you can show it as a native, unplaited if the show is local the plaited and unplaited ponies will all be mixed together, if you wanted you could plait and some people will but I would stick with the native turnout. The ponies you saw may be of welsh type as so many small ponies will be of welsh origin.

Riding Pony L/Rs and First Riddens are shown plaited, native breeds are not. Are you doing L/R or F/R and is the show unaffiliated? If so as previous poster said you will probably see all sorts in you class!

What level of show is it?

At our local shows, most of us with Welsh sec As used to plait. I used to do a running plait on her long mane with the forelock plaitted normally, others pulled and plaitted. We did all leadrein stuff from equitation, showing, WH, jumping etc like that.

If your pony is not registered M&M I would plait,, If you involve your daughter in all the prep then she will be able to use this as even more valuable experience. Also think how proud you will be when you look at the pics and your pony is all smart and plaited :)

I would plait unless its a m&m class.
Having shown a section a unplaited and plaited daughter always got places further up when she was plaited. I think she probably got more points for the effort.
He was a registered sec a too.

I'd say plait too, unless you are doing m&m classes. At unaffiliated local level I'd say 90% in lr/fr are natives anyway, yet the majority are plaited.

Yes, if he isn't a registered M&M, it doesn't matter what size the show, turnout (in my humble opinion) should be the same for a village fundraiser as for a County job.

Our Welsh A type was clipped, power hosed (he loved it :)) plaited, painted and powdered to within an inch of his wicked little life.
