hi,
my just turning 2yo has come into season - i have never had anything come into season in Jan before - is this normal:confused:
she started to have seasons about august and was pretty regular but like my other mares in the past she stopped when it got colder but she came in the other day again??

oh - and its freezing up here just now so cant be that its getting warmer!

My TB mare cycles all year round, with often quite a violent season immediately after the Winter Solstice (21 December!!!) when daytime length starts increasing again!

Good luck with her ;)

My mares cycle all year round, even the younger ones.

A well fed, well kept, healthy mare will usually continue cycling with perhaps a slight decrease in intensity but never a full stop. That said a healthy mare kept outside 24/24 will usually stop in the colder, darker winter months.

If your mare is healthy and happy I would not worry about it.

(It maybe an indication that we're in for an earlier spring!?? ... Hope not!)

thanks - she is rugged and is looking great just now she is in at night but lights go out when she comes in and been fed etc
hope its going to be an early spring, i'm fed up of winter

My yearling filly was in season in December. Couldn't understand it when she was squirting at the gelding next door! So I'm glad she's not the only one....

Our little mare comes into season whenever she feels like it in winter. Shes fairly regular in the summer months but come winter its a lucky dip, pick the wrong day of the week to ride and its game over! :P

i think i've the only mini shetland mare who thinks its spring every day of the month, 365 days a year !!! either that or she's just a complete tart !! she's got the thickest longest coat, no rug and lives out 24/7. she even stands outside my young geldings door every night and proceeds to 'p' all over the yard, come the morning it stinks and looks a complete mess. she even tries to chat him up through the fence during the day, calling to him if he's not within 20 ft of her. she obviously likes the big boys, shes 31/32" and he's 15.3, thankfully he's not really interested :-)
