my brother is thinking about having his bitch neutered, however his vet is recommending she have a litter of pups first. apparently if she doesn't she has a greater risk of cancer. has anyone heard of this?
thanks

Ditto - have never EVER heard of that in my life! NO-WHERE! How bizarre - would deffo change vets, but ask him why he says that beforehand.

I'd change your vet.

Agreed. Completely irresponsible of him/her to encourage wanton breeding. Not to mention the fact that spaying after a female dog's first heat considerably increases her risk of contracting uterine cancer.

As everyone else has said- find a new vet.

It's a very old-fashioned view (not to mention downright irresponsible, particularly from a vet) that having a litter is necessary before spaying and a lot of vets now advise spaying before the first season; apparently this is the best way to reduce the risk of mammary tumours later.

no dont think thats true!! me mum said it mite but you never know its when they get bred they have more of a chance of getting an infection in the womb which can kill them! because when we went the vets to ask about buddy they said we should get the girl done first! and also my uncles dog got bred then had to get her womb out

poor girl x

Would ahve to disagree with your vet. One of the vets at my practice made my friend feel awful as she wanted to breed from her ped spanile & when having her first session of vacc's he made her feel so irresponisble & that she was putting her health at risk. Said vet is not a fan of mine.
Had my older girl done after her first season, she is now 6 & touch would never had any probs. Amazingly when I went in with new pup which I am going to breed from as amazing lines said vet never mentioned having her neutered to me!!!!!
But he knows my views!!

Ditto everyone else; this is what vets used to say about 3 decades ago - I believe this sort of thinking has moved on somewhat from those days.

What a load of rubbish IMO. Pregnancy is very stressful for dogs and it would be far better to have neutered as this will save her from a catalogue of future health probs.
Change your vet and leave the breeding to the professionals!

This is an old wives tale and quite frankly I'm shocked that a fellow member of my profession would suggest this.

I've been in practice for 13 years and have seen lots of cases of mammary tumours in older entire females. This problem can be completely avoided if the bitch is speyed before her first season. Even if she's speyed after her first season the incidence is greatly reduced.
Also older speyed females run the risk of pyometra - a serious infection of the womb which can occassionally be fatal if not treated sharply. Coincidentally the treatment for pyometra is to spey the bitch and take the infected womb away, but it is surgery performed on an older and sick animal as opposed to a young healthy one.
As far as cancers of the ovaries and uterus - these are less common but can occur as easily in a bitch that has had a litter to one that hasn't. I certainly haven't seen any scientific proof to the contrary.
In my opinion unless your brothers dog is a top show or working dog I think he is quite right and doing the responsible thing getting her speyed. Perhaps people here are right and another vet might be a good bet.

.......erm....... how can a spayed bitch develop pyometra . . . she needs a uterus to do that and if she's been spayed, she hasn't got one!

I was told that you should have them spayed unless you wanted a litter as this reduceds the chance of getting cancer! If you have a litter, as soon as you dont want to breed anymore then get them done.

My 1 yr old Jack Russell is having a phantom pregnancy, has anyone elses had this?
