Ive had a pony with an abscess. Ive been poulticing and nothing appears to be coming out. There is still heat in the hoof and is foot sore. This has been going on for over a week, althou farrier only found abscess on monday. Is it normal for heat still to be there.

My boy had a corn (abcess in the seat of corns) & I hot poulticed it for about 4-5 days then dry poulticed for a day & then the farrier came out & checked it, it was all clear so the hole was plugged with antibac bees wax & shoe put back on but heat stayed in the hoof for about a week after even though it had gone. Mines a tb so he's foot sore as soon as his shoes are off..it wasn't anything to do with the abcess as it was already gone.

Thanks thats made me feel a bit better. He is a native type but if he looses a shoe he is a real wus. Ive just been worried about the heat still been there.

Mine was back in work for two weeks before the heat disappeared, when coming off wet ground you could see one dry of loads quicker than the other, then one day, no heat and been find ever since.

And my other horse had a really bad abcess which lasted 6 weeks & they thought it was so deep that it had gone through to her bone, once it had cleared up it was warm for ages so as long as not pussy & nothing more is coming out your probably safe.. I find it's always best to ask your farrier though just to get it checked..I'm a worrier..lol

No I'm a big worrier..my boy had surgery in Feb & ever since I'm a bigger worrier than ever!!! Keep us updated with what the farrier says..Good luck

Well the farrier came today and didnt want to put the shoe back on due to the heat, which is a little less tday. He can here a squidgy noise coming from the hole so he thinks there is some still left in there. He is back to staying in and im going to do tubbing with salt water, and he will come out again on sunday to have another look.

yeh that would be a good idea, i tried this with mine but he had a fit every time i put his hoof in the bucket, i think they also say about epsom salts in water. I used one of them plastic hoof boots over his vet rap to keep it really clean & it worked a treat.

I know, I had the vet out & he told me that he didn't have an abcess, he thought he'd just bruised his toe but told me to poultice anyway so for 3 days until my farrier came out & found the corn I was poulticing the wrong part of his foot!!!!! I was not a happy bunny.. I've also heard the hydrogen peroxide is the best thing to clear them up..I'd check how much & that with the vet first though..
