Hey,

So I have on Facebook a few post about it being okay to feed horses carrots as they are 80% water. This is fine put I think with all the issues of the general public feeding horse lots of different things or large amounts of veg . Should we really be promoting carrots are okay for horses . They are okay for most horse but what about large volumes or if the horse chocked because of them . We have essentially spent the last few years in the equine world saying feeding horses products likes carrots isn’t good for them but now we are promoting it’s all okay ?

I have seen this circulating a bit over the last few weeks but have seen it posted by a local riding school and feed store no doubt the feed store used it as a promotional thing . Should we really be blurring the lines for the general public ?

I'm not sure what you are getting at. The 80% water and carrots thing came from the site on FB of Clare Macleoud who is an equine nutritionalist. If you don't believe it have you asked her to clarify.

There are no lines to blur for the general public. The advice to them is don't feed someone else's animals ANYTHING.

One carrot now and again is OK but we have visitors who throw carrots to the ponies one carrot per person could mean 50 carrots per pony in one day.

We have had one nearly die eating one. Also chopped up small carrots are the bain of our lives.
