Should you breed your dog?

I fail on "emotionally prepared" if it all goes wrong. Not that I was planning to breed from mine.

I "think" that I have a pretty good quality bitch. But even if she develops, how we hope, there are many others out there with better and with more experience on the breeding side. Mainly though, I don't want to have to explain to my kids, if something went wrong during breeding and we lost our pet.

We lost a whole litter and almost the bitch the last time we bred (late 1980s, her second litter) and that does kinda take the joy out of it.

Guess if we had not had all the health checks done and show grades put on her and reversed her into any old 'nice' dog it would have turned out perfectly....seems to work out for everyone else!!

Now you just posted that to wind me up didn't you :D As some on here know (and now everyone :p)Evie is in whelp, and if I am honest there are 2 boxes there that maybe I can't say yes to 1) I don't think you are ever emotionally prepared for things going wrong, but I do hope I am experienced enough to deal with it, and in the final box she has not been shown or taken part in a working event, but again I feel I am experienced enough to know she is of suitable quality for breeding, and the dog I have chosen (as recommended by CC) has the right attributes to suit her and improve upon her.
Please don't all dash to berate me now (particularly you Cayla ;)) as I am off to bed and won't get round to reading the abuse until later tomorrow.:D

Not the first time I have been accused of being an enabler on here :p :p :p

Of course not knocking people who do things properly :) and of course I have bought pups (albeit second hand :p) but it just ain't for me. I don't actually seem to be able to make a cup of tea without stressing these days though :p

Scary flow diagram, but agree whole-heartedly. Can think of some other species that could do with the same perspective....

wades on in to *abuse MM* and call *COT Hitler*:p:p:p:p:p:p:p:p:p:p:p:p

I think it should have added a box for *taking a risk* of never actually being sure that puppy you sold will end up in the genuine home that presented to you and not a hell hole or a pound or used as a breeding machine or sold on to a more unsuitable home a few months/years down the line, because above all else I think deep down this is one of the reasons I could never breed from a dog myself.
It's hard enough for me homing rescues and trying your best to place them in genuine homes and not constantly worry they where not what/who they pretended to be.

If breeding happens however I would rather it be left to the responsible breeders like MM, even though I would like to abuse her:p

I would add to the competing box an option for a dog working successfully in the field in working breeds, other than that I think it's pretty much dead on :)

Oops thought you meant me there lexie (you didn't did you:o)).
Not sure which forum you are referring to ct but I would have thought any sensible breeders would agree with the points raised. As Cayla says the only thing I would add is about finding the right homes for puppies, as far as I am aware only 2 pups were passed on to new owners after I had sold them without me being informed, and in both those cases I was contacted by the new owners, but nothing is totally infallible. With Evies future litter so far all the people on waiting list are either people who have had dogs from me before or people who have had dogs from fellow breeders and come highly recommended . One may be going to a national organisation and if he/she doesn't pass all necessary tests may become available for rehoming, but I will be involved at this stage so will be able to carry out all checks. Pups will be tattooed and microchipped and will have a contract so I,m as confident as I can be that their futures will be secure. But having said all that yes I do worry, and do shed a tear when they go.
