I have my two horses in one field and there is another horse on her own, but she is so lonely. I suggested that they all share a field.

I couldn't believe it when the yard owner shouted me down - it's extremely rude for one thing and short sighted for another.

It should be outlawed keeping horses on their own, they are naturally herd animals and should be kept together.

Is there a reason why the mare is kept alone? A lot of yards have seperate grazing for mares and geldings but I don't see why you should be shouted at when suggesting she is lonely.
At the end of the day, it's her yard and if the mare's owner doesn't have a problem, there's nothing you can do.

If everything else about the yard is good, I wouldn't leave because of this :)

Can the horses all see each other?

Yes, they are herd animals, but I only have two of mine in the same paddock, they can all see each other, but if I put anyone in with the mare, then the poor thing that went in with her is lamed within about 20 seconds....

Unfortunately, if it's not your horse, there is not much you can do about it....

My mare spent much of her life on individual turnout. When she was out with others, she was not only impossible to catch, she also rounded up everything else so that noone else could catch their horses either. She also regularly took a chunk out of whatever gelding was misbehaving at the time. She would never have dreamt of kicking or biting anyone or anything when she was tied up on the yard, but she had her own rules when she was out. Perhaps this mare is like my one?

its maybe not as cut and dry as you think. Some hroses need to stand on their own for a number of reasons... you may not approve but its someone elses horse so best not interfere.
It really will cause problems if you interfere with someone elses horse care so maybe if you can t cope it might be best for you to go back to your old yard.

I'm more upset about being shouted at. My horses are my hobby and I don't think that any yard owner should shout at anyone. I am not the only one either.

The suggestion was not ridiculous and didn't warrant such behavior.

Lets just say that I won't be recommending the yard.

If they can all see each other, being alone shouldn't be a problem, although I agree they should have company. There may be a valid reason for it.
But I would be having a word with your YO about her customer service skills, she wouldn't shout at me twice

I agree, why do some women feel the need to be scary and shouty? I remember a few very shouty stouty women who very nearly put me off horsedom altogether... It's all very strange.

You should just shrug it off my dear. Not your problem, as clearly, judging by her attitude towards you, there seems to be something amiss...

That feeling you get will soon pass, if it doesn't, vote with your legs. Plenty of nice people around :D

Awww maybe he has a problem (wiggling my little finger :D) and needs to shout at women so he feels like a real man, lol!

LOL little man sin drone , but not all horses ant to live with others, so do not feel too bad, I tried several times with my old boy...... He hated every one introduced him to, and that I think is the clue..

Domestic horse do not have a choice, we put them together, they do not choose ,,

I agree with you OP, I hate to see horses kept alone. Unfortunately some people do not realise that a great deal of horses' natural communication is done by touch/close contact, being able to see/hear other horses in the distance is not enough.
I don't think I would stay on a yard where the YO shouted at me.
