Could anyone recommend where you can get nice handmade show canes? I just want something a bit different & have been googling but not getting very far so maybe there are some recommendations for the showing aficionados! :D

Look at Swaine & Adeny whips on ebay. These are the most elegant and well balanced whips you can find. They will be vintage and expensive but very special.

I had looked on ebay but nothing really took my fancy and yes some of the vintage ones are very expensive but beautiful! I dont mind spending maybe £70/80 but I think that would be my limit.

@Keith_Beef Yes something like a nicely shaped stick in a dark wood with a silver tip would be what I'm kinda thinking! My horse is dark, so I thought dark wood would be nice??

Just seen the above post - I was made one by my OH's then employer who was into wood turning. It is decorative with a little glass stone in the top. Must admit don't use it now as OH prefers not to be reminded of the employer! Imagine a wood turner would find it quite interesting to do.

Does a showing cane have any purpose?

Historically, would it have been used to point to parts of an animal when talking about it, or would it have been used to tap the animal to encourage it to move?

I wonder if it should be of a contrasting colour to the animal, so a paler coloured cane for a dark animal and a darker cane for a pale animal...

For pale woods, look at beech, hornbeam, fruit woods (apple, pear, cherry), holly (but can be difficult to find in big pieces) and box.

Quite a few of the showing canes I've looked at since this thread started have been leather covered, so there you can use just about any wood you want.

Thanks a mil for the all the replies! I think I might have seen one I like on Preloved so fingers crossed.

Interesting - I have been chatting to a few people about the same thing & it kinda does spilt the room, some have said that everything should be tonal so as not to distraction from the overall picture of the horse. And others same as yourself - it should stand out against the horse. I'm kinda in the tonal camp at the moment so I'm going to have another look around.

I found a fabulous leather officers cane on Ebay, really beautiful but I think its a bit long for what I want!
