Hi everyone

I've been advised by a judge today to take my boy (once we are fully up and running next year) to enter into the show hack classes. Now this class is something I know nothing about or know anyone that does so it's all very alien! I've googled it so I've found out the basic info and it does sound perfect for him (he's full TB, very flashy and the judge says his confirmation is to die for - yey) so now just looking for any h&h advice? X

He mustn't be over 15.3hh for affiliated classes. Schooling is everything, he should be very light and balanced, and be able to and seen riding with one hand. A lot of the top people tend to do half passes etc, (at least they used to). There is a bit of a grey area between hacks and riding horses. Try looking up some pictures of john and vicki keen, they used to win a lot with hacks.

look on the british show horse association website - lots of info.

Large hacks are up to 15.3 and you would need a height certificate. Can't remember what small hacks go up to.

There are novice classes, then open hacks which are judged normally in two separate classes of small and large.

Judge rides and you do an individual show, so you get more fun for your money.

Hack classes normally small in number, often only 3 or 4.

There are also amateur classes and home produced classes. You generally don't get hack classes other than at affiliated shows or shows like Equifest as most smaller shows just do riding horse or hunter.

Hacks have to be incredibly well schooled, light and elegant, and give responsive well manner ride to the judge.

You wear a navy jacket and the horse goes for a bling browband.

Have been lucky enough to win at county and do HOYS with my ex racehorse turned show hack so it is possible to do well as an ordinary amateur.

Oh yes and hack classes are normally very very early!

Oh my lord, Im only wanting it for local classes hopefully for next year ...

So whats the difference between the hack and riding horse class? Is there a large difference?

There is not much difference its just another category of show class, the RH is usually a bit more workmanlike than the hack not quite a hunter.
You should wear tweed not navy, horse not too much of a flashy browband and they will be expected to show a good extension.
