Hi, just following on from my thread about Derma Gel - thanks for answers/advice Has anyone here shown in working or/and ridden hunter with scars/lumps/bumps? What are your experiences?
Workers is a lot more forgiving as the way of going and ability to hunt is the key in the class. Our mare had windgalls and a couple of minor scars and never stopped her winning ridden hunter. Quite a few lumps and bumps can be cleverly hidden now witht he aid of make-up. Not technically correct, but certainly do-able up to county level
I've wondered this, as Ned is covered in lumps, bumps and scars. I think it gives him character, but would judges agree?
I had no comments about it at the one show I did, but I was the only one who entered
Certainly at local and lower county level, a horse with good conformation and a blemish/scar clearly caused by accidental injury will probably still do quite well - my show hack had some serious scars/bumps from tangling herself in a fence and still did quite well. It's the lumps and bumps caused by comformational defects that are the problematic ones that will get you seriously penalised.
My pba was injured as a youngster, left with a scar on his pastern after going through a stable door or gate, not sure exactly as it was before I bought him.
I showed him as a ridden pba he went to the Cherif champs, he also placed well at county level and nationals as a hack then riding horse, his scar was never commented on.
Thanks for your stories - he does have great natural conformation (he's my avatar - that was his first show this spring (not competing), just been ridden around and not totally up to weight. Gives me a bit of hope and a LOT of motivation to get his schooling right! Actually, I'm a bit more relaxed now - think we might leave the school alone for a bit and get up on the moors!
