Hi, Am just going through my county show schedules and am wondering what to do. Am doing the coloured class in all the shows as thats what we do, but I want to do something else with him!! I cant really justify travelling an hour+ to just do one class. So what about Open Show Hunter? He's on the SHB register as I do working hunter with him so thats no issue. But is he the correct weight to do the 148 - 158??? I dont really know what a show hunter should look like!!!!!

He's 15.2hh by the way... (and has a JMB height certificate!)

Any help would be fab!

I think he could do it but you have to get rid of the coloured browband and get him a wider noseband!
to be honest no matter what class you are in i dont think he should be wearing a coloured browband, he is a bit to heavy to pull one off!

Have you a picture of him stood up? It's a bit difficult to see how much bone he has in the posted shot.
If he hasn't enough bone for the small hunters then small riding horse would be an option.
I'm sure he could do one or the other as he looks very nice.

Colour prejudice is slowly being broken down as there has just been a coloured hack qualify for RIHS.....heaven forbid

Hard to tell from the pics but you might want to change your brownband to plain one. You could do the small hunters but cant really tell have you not got another pic of him stood up so we can tell.

Lovely horse by the way.

I'll find another pic, he does look heavier in that picture! He's to light for small hunter and I would change his browband for any hunter class. Its only because he is shown as a non-native in affiliated coloured classes that hes in a coloured browband.

Ok... not the best picture, but best one on my computer... dont quite know what hes doing with his back legs!!

Is he confident jumping? What about intermediate working hunter?
Also think there may be an intermediate Show hunter. Personally I thin he is not a riding horse as a bit too much bone.

In non native coloured classes you turn out to type and i think he's a hunter pony type therefore you would have a plain browband.

I think he is a little heavy for show hunter IMO. But if it gave you another class to do on the day then no harm in doing it. I think you would be better in a normal hunter class.

I agree that he should be turned out as a hunter, even in coloured classes, he really is too heavy to carry off a coloured browband.

At 15.2hh he's too big for show hunter pony classes, but some shows may have Intermediate Show Hunter classes (for riders 25 and under) which may suit him more than the traditional Small Hunter classes (which are also an option, but I don't think he's big enough looking at those photos - they tend to be very "big" 15.2hhs, although if he gives a good ride it will go in his favour, as in Small Hunter classes the judge will ride, whereas in Intermediate classes the judge doesn't ride.

Yes its open show hunter for which he is the correct height (148-158cm as I stated in my first post).

Re. his browband, he is more competition horse type as classed as a lightweight therefore in comparison to hunters he looks small so I show him as a competition type with a coloured browband. I have been told by many people he's too light for small hunter, also to be shown as a hunter in coloured classes he's to lightweight and they agree he should be in a coloured browband.

I do working hunter normally, but some of the shows only have M&M workers, hence why I need to find another class.

Thanks for your advice, the pictures dont do him justice! I have been showing coloureds for a years but never ventured further than workers and small hunter!!!

Still not sure whether to do it or not!!

i'm sorry to disagree but i dont think he is to light to be a hunter, he is alot heavier then alot of the hunters out there! and he realy doent have a fine enough head to carry a coloured browband.
The only horses ever shown in coloured browbands are, hacks, riding horses, arabs and show ponies and some intermediates. he is deffinately not a riding horse IMHO as he is to heavily built. Turnout to type in coloured classes which means you would turn out exactly how you would if the horse was a solid colour. If he were a solid colour i would turn him out as a hunter type.

Open show hunters are usually for horses over 158cms, with small hunters for 148-158cms, unless the show has unusual rules. If you think he's too lightweight for small hunters, he will be too lightweight for open hunters too - they're all hunters. Although I think hunters are the class for him.

Sports horses are showin in plain browbands, as you would use if you wear competing in eventing/dressage etc, so I'm not sure why you're using a coloured browband because he's a sports horse.

Do you have any more photos of him? He's lovely and I'm sure you'll do well whatever you wear.

I think the judges will decide whether or not he should be in a coloured browband and looking at his successfull record and from the comments I have recieved I'll think I'll leave him in it!! Also he won yesterday (CHAPS) and I asked the judge and she said as a non-native he should be in a coloured browband. His brother who is identical in weight but 2 inches bigger got to RIHS in a coloured browband.

Show hunters are finer than small hunter arn't they??? Hence why I was wondering if I should do that class?? I did a small hunter class yesterday as well, we got second, but he was the smallest in the class and it wasnt affiliated.

I think it was the monmouthshire county show schedule I was looking at, or might have been something else, sure it said open show hunter was 148-158... may be not. I'll have a look again!

I'll go for intermediates then, he is lovely, hes an absolute star! I never come home empty handed which is great as if I did I would revert back to show jumping! I have got more pictures on my other computer, I'll have a look later when its a bit more of a normal time (it's 5.15pm)!!

Take a look at the windsor pics (Pleasure Prints website) and check out the winner of the coloured class - (Puzzlemaster). His turnout is spot on. However, it is obviously up to each individual person as to what they think suits their horse best.

having looked at the other photos on the site Fmm posted a link to, there are only i think 3 in coloured browbands and they were conciderably finer then your lad

Excuse the copyright... but this is probably a more accurate picture. He's really not that heavy. We qualified Riding Horse for Puk this year so he cant be that heavy.

Anyway this is not the issue. For Show Hunter he would be in a plain browband, and I'm sure I would have had at least one judge in the last year and a half tell me he shouldnt be in a coloured browband.

judges wont comment unless specificly asked. thats why there are so many people in incorrect attire at local level.

also if your going to insist on wearing a coloured browband then at least get a proper one with rosettes and flags on the side.

Yeh it was harsh... your talking very much down to me like you think I dont actually know what I'm doing, I've been showing coloureds for a while now, I've groomed for proffessionals and worked in the industry quite a while. "A proper one" would look to fancy on him, would take the attention away from his good facial features, and we all know showing is about enhancing the horses best features.

Anyway end of... this is off topic and starting to bore me.

And by the way its spelt "experiEnce" not "experiAnce" as you have in your sig.

look when i saw the first pic i thought he had quite a big head and his browband didnt look right, poss slightly too small. his head looks infinately better and more in proportion in the proffesional copyrighted one but the browband still looks slightly to small an i would say a slightly bigger one which is slightly wider would balance his head a bit more, or scrap it all together and go for a plain one. to be completely honest i realy dont think that the one hes got on is doing him any favours.
