Just posting out of curiosity....

I was thinking of buying a smart, navy show/sj jacket to compete in. Now having seen other riders compete in a vast array of accesories (eg. diamonte belt!) what I was thinking of buying I thought was quite 'traditional'/smart and plain....but my instructor has said that I should always wear a tweed jacket and that evrything els is naf!

I probably won't buy the jacket anyway but whats your opinion?

Depends what competing you're doing really. If mainly showjumping then navy or black is the norm. If you are intending on doing more eventing/showing then tweed is quite common but it really depends on the level anyway. If just local, it really doesn't matter and go for what you like/want.

I have always had a black show jacket as mainly did showjumping and this si also fine for dressage and eventing dressage. However, i intend on doing a few more event type show classes this year and have invested (or actually been given as a present) a tweed jacket as is more appropriate for what I am doing. Plus, can also wear this for showjumping for the time being. If I do more showjumping I will then get another black show jacket as I feel that's more correct attire for jumping.

A good tweed that's well cut will do for everything and is never incorrect. Much better money well spent!

Either a plain well cut navy blue or tweed will stand you in good stead no matter what your competition aims. I would say steer well clear of anything braided or sparkle embellished as they will date your purchase and go for the best quality you can afford.

I have a nice tweed and a navy jacket. I manly wear the tweed as suits cobby better, i may wear the navy if i do dressage. We only do local but still like to look smart :D

I'd go with what you like if it fits in with what you want to do :)

My daughter has a bright blue one which isn't to everyone's taste but she loves it & saved up her self for it. She wears it for showjumping & PC rallies (we are a quite relaxed pc!)

She also has a tweed for when the blue one isn't allowed but she hates it :(

What type of horse/pony do you have?

If a native then tweed is 'correct', and is certainly acceptable whatever discipline you are doing too.
There are some very smart well-cut tweeds out there - choose a colour to complement your horse's colouring (SO much easier with tweed than black/navy;))
