Has anyone got any ideas on what we can use to make some jumps? we already have some jumps but instead of paying lots of money for some we thought we could make some. has any got any ideas on what we could use like materials etc (tyres, cones, etc). we want to make them like they have at shows so that the ponies are used to jumping the scary jumps, so any ideas welcome thanks

Tyres and cones make good scary fillers, as do bales of shavings or hay.

tbh anything you can put under a jump will help to get them used to scary jumps. Tarpauline can act as a good water tray as well.

we were thinking of getting either bales of hay or straw and putting them in feed bags or the covers you can get to make them scary. also was thinking of making a water as thought tarpulin may blow around if windy, what would be suitable to make a water tray with? also thinking of making a gate

Hi :) we had the same problem..we used EVERYTHING!! pallets, wooden fence poles, tyres, barrels, i even spent a couple of hours making my own fillers from plyboard. now i've built a whole load of jumps- and ok- admittedly it doesnt look as professional- but they work as well and my horses are now pretty bombproof when jumping!! But really- anything you see and think would be good to jump- just stick it in a field and jump it!! :)

Paint some planks of wood to make some brightly coloured planks, get some wooden boards and paint them to make fillers, hang a rug off a jump to make a scary jump, put two poles on top of a plastic sheet to make a water tray. You could use plant pots underneath jumps to make them look different. If you bought a couple of rustic poles, you can buy pole sleeves which aren't very expensive to make them look like proper jumping poles.

Hope this helps. :)

I made a tonne of fillers out of plywood and cardboard! I put pipe cleaners, tinsel and water balloons on them! They were brilliant for my horse who is spooky and now competes without looking at much. If you want to make new wings, we got a design off of google my dad got wood and built them! I then painted them very interesting colours etc.

I think its more fun making your own jumps then buying ready made ones :D

thanks for the ideas, keep them coming. will try and get some road work signs that arent being used, and will ask around for barrels, etc.
kokopelli- i like your pony, he/she looks exactly like mine :)

Steal some cones and barriers off the road, if they're silly enough to leave them lying around on the road then its there fault ;)

And thankyou I do love a good appy! :D

yeah thats what we were thinking, especially as they leave them laying around when they have finished the work
yeah i love them too, how big is he/she? pm me if you prefer

I've got an old large beach towel which is wide green and white stripes with a huge red dragon on it (it came from Wales!). I tie it onto a plain rustic pole with string. Really scary, but he jumps it brilliantly now! Also have a friend who works for an estate agent (the posh one that begins with "S"!) and so their for sale boards are individually printed for each property, she brings some of them home once the property is sold and they are used for fillers as well. Fluorescent excercise sheet over a jump is pretty spooky on a gloomy day. Our feed merchant was giving away some 20 litre water containers, so I took a few of them, and made sleeves for them out of plastic feed sacks which have patterns and horses heads on them. I haven't bought any spooky fillers etc, because TBH once they've jumped them a few times and don't find them spooky any more you need to buy something else. I'd rather he jumped whatever was put in front of him, even if it's come from the laundry basket or the tip! Just make sure it's safe.
