I think I've seen a few people recently jumping with a stock shirt but no stock or tie, is this normal for show jumping? I'm about to brave my first outing soon, only low level, but just wondering what correct dress code would be (including for the horse), and also if there are any bits and pieces would really recommend as i have a birthday coming up and not too much on my list yet!

The shirt could be an American collar. I’ve got one as I find it a lot less hassle than putting a tie or a stock on

Hardly anyone wears a stock or tie to jump where I am. I much prefer an American collar myself.

Dress code for yourself:
White or beige breeches
long boots or short boots with gaiters
shirt and tie or shirt with American collar
jacket - black/navy or tweed
Gloves optional

Dress code for your horse:
Whatever tack your horse goes in
Numnah can be white or coloured
Boots optional
Plaiting optional

Good luck and let us know how you get on ?

I haven’t been out jumping in a few years but always wore a shirt and tie. Anybody got links to the American collars that they use? Interested to know about these

American collar just looks like a stock shirt you didn’t put a stock on (and in fact you can just do that). I prefer to buy ones with short sleeves and then you can wear them jacket off (whereas if the judge says you can take the jacket off affiliated you can still only do it if you’re wearing sleeves!)

Affiliated you can wear any colour shirt as long as the collar is white and you can wear white, yellow, beige, grey or fawn breeches (and brown, black or blue riding boots). Unaffilliated in theory anything goes but in practise tend to be more old fashioned so I wear white!

I’m trying to attach a photo of a recent affiliated jackets-off so you can see what I mean about grey breeches and coloured shirts with white collars. Jacket can be literally any colour but not a bad idea to buy black or navy then you can also do dressage in it!

It does vary from venue to venue and is fairly relaxed however the only things I've seen people pulled up on is wrong colour jods and long hair not suitably secured. Usually there's a note on dress code on the schedule for various venues.
