Hi,

My mare has managed to break herself during a mad 5 mins out.

IM thinking about all the options at the moment and putting her in foal if shes out of action for a while sounds possible.

Any ideas about possible dads ??

Ideally id want a showjumping stallion.

Alittle about the mare - shes 16.3hh bay and has the best temp you could wish for. She a few little conformational faults (slightly toed in), but nothing awful at all. shes an irish sports horse.

Id be breeding for me to produce and show jump. Im 5ft 7in and of light build, so not looking to breed and total monster if possible.

who would you pick??

it depends on what level you want to jump to really. personally id choose an irish stallion something like free spirit or jumbo. but thats my opinion clover hill lines tend to be very talented jumpers 1 of my horses grandsire's is clover hill and he is very scopey very good hunter and make good shape over show jumps. but as i say it depends where you want to end up with the foal?

There are loads of stallions and to reduce it down to a couple would not be easy. Check out this months Horse Deals, Horse Mart, Stallions Online, Horse Breeders Magazine. All these have details of all sorts of stallions both here and abroad.

With an irish mare she is likely to be a mix of TB and Irish Draught, although there are quite a few ISH mares with some continental blood. The variety available to you is endless. If she is a blood type I would go with a warmblood to get some ooomph and power in the jump and if she is a halfbred would choose a warmblood with plenty of blood in his back breeding to give scope.

With my ISH mares those that have 100% Irish breeding then they get 100% Irish bred stallions and any that have a continental cross, I look at warmbloods although I am an Irish horse devotee but for show jumping these days you need the power and discipline of a warmblood over big tracks.

So saying, any half decently schooled horse should compete at 1.20 without too many hiccups.

Cruising, Russell, Galloway, Dow Jones Courcel to name a few (AI available)

Nobody could possibly put down a stallion without seeing more of the mare and what you hope to produce as in build, conformation, talents, height, colour, studbook you wish to register the foal, etc.

i will try and pop up a few photos. i dont have many comf shots, mainly jumping etc.

as for her breeding, so came to me after a few ownership changes and all she has is a bhs passport with no info... basically mare/bay/ jan birth date!
her comp life didnt start until i got her so i cant even trace that back.

any help would be great as i really dont know what im up to breeding wise... its never been something i have had the option of doing before (aways had geldings).

if shes going to be broken for a while i thought shes such a nice girl that it would be a shame not to do something with her. the foal would be for my own personal use.

hope this works- not the best photos but thats all i have at the mo! ( dont want to take ones of her with her big support bandage on! )

Great jumping pictures, but do you have any conformation ones? In the jumping pictures, does she tend to drop her front legs over a jump? If so, then you would perhaps be looking for a stallion that is a little sharper in their technique over a jump.

Also going back to what I said originally:

I used Balou du rouet on my mare he is a nice stallion and i have a lovely 3yo with good paces (who could easily do dressage) he has a good temprement and is again 16.3 so you wont get anything massive !

I also really like supert trooper de ness who im using this year on my mare x

I agree one of the criteria for a possible stallion would be very good front leg style over a fence.

Also from the photos she looks a little low in the heels with TB type feet, so good front feet conformation too.

She looks like a nice mare from the photos.

You have a great chance to start learning this weekend at the UK Stallion Expo at College EC, Keysoe, Bedford. I believe there are quite a few british based stallions on show as well as stands representing various studs. Also a great chance to start networking - take photos of your horse and her breeding. One thing to remember, you are unlikely to get the same suggestion from any two people!!

Handell! thats who i'd use, i'v always liked him i think he's 16.2hh and bay also i am a big fan of him. x

Have a look at No Limit at Whorridge Farm Stud in Devon. I think he SJ'd to 1.50m. He's a proven SJ sire and was top KWPN stallion at his grading. He's by Indoctro, so bred for the job too. I have no vested interest in him other than my IDxTB ex-intermediate event mare is currently in foal to him!

thanks guys.

Nomis -- (what you hope to produce as in build, conformation, talents, height, colour, studbook you wish to register the foal, etc.)
If i could clone her i would!! Id like something similar build/type as her, better conformation would be a bonus and as you say slightly better front leg tech! Her temp is fantasic, maybe could be alittle sharper so we could be a bit more competitive. i dont mind about colour at all. I would rather not go any bigger than 16.3hh being a girl. Stud book wise it really wouldnt bother me either.

Id like a nice temp. 16hh-16.3hh that would be competitive over 1.20-1.30s

Unbelievable Darco! Super neat in front, winner of £30,000 BSJA, wins many classes, fabulous temperament and has BD points too!

Handell is at ann bedfords stud quite a high cover fee but he was competed by michael whittaker he was quite amazing a bit quirky but super talented

Peppermill. With him now available, he should surely be shot to the top of peoples to use list. Its ok to talk about what certain horses achieved in the ring, but eh, most horses pale in comparison to him.
If not him then Je T'aime Flamenco or if available Vangelis S

i would love to use peppermill. I assumed he would be elite mare only or something like that (i think arko is elite only isnt he?). If peppermills not he would be top of my list!

Peppermill is lots of money- but if you have it he is lovely.

Super Trooper de Ness is wonderful...I have an ST baby due in August.

If you go to this weeks Horse and Hound - go to the Sport Horse Section and come to the first photo of two foals. The one on the right is out of an Irish Mare who jumped up to 1.20m and has been sold for 10 times the studfee ... sorry can not tell you the page as I can not find my copy....The sire in question would be a good choice for you.
