it may sound daft but I think it'll help!

never having any showing/event experience I find myself baffled sometimes.. for example:

What are hunter Trials?
What is a double clear round?
what is a jump off?
how is a one day event judged?
What is affiliated and unaffiliated?
How do you progress in jumping.. ie do the bigger events, do you need to qualify for others?
what us involved in a 'fun ride'?

etc etc.. Anyone have anything to add that us newbies may not know? I dont really mind if I sound dumb & im aware google exists just maybe reading it all in one thread would be nice! :p

I'm sure someone will correct me if I get any of this wrong (don't compete much myself).

What are hunter Trials?
Basically a cross country competition.

What is a double clear round?
In show jumping classes, you generally have 2 rounds. If you go clear the first time round then you get through to the jump off (usually a shorter course) which is timed. Double clear - no faults in either round.

what is a jump off?
See above.

how is a one day event judged?
Dressage score and faults in both jumping phases combined. There are also time limits - going over adds faults.

Local events may differ from BE events in how they structure/score.

What is affiliated and unaffiliated?
Affiliated - event run by relevant organisation/governing body e.g. British Eventing, BSJA, British Dressage etc. You have to be a member (or can get a 'day ticket') and your results are recorded. You can progress up through the levels.

e.g.

Unaffiliated - local events not affiliated with one of the governing bodies.

How do you progress in jumping.. ie do the bigger events, do you need to qualify for others?
At local shows it is usually up to you to decide the class you want to enter. Some local shows put on qualifier classes for bigger shows. In affiliated show jumping you work up the levels, and have to move up as you win more (although there are open classes open to anyone regardless of winnings).

what us involved in a 'fun ride'?
Varies - usually a meet up of lots of riders to have a fun, social ride - can be organised by riding clubs or hunts. Many moons ago I did some of these

Some maybe on farm rides with optional jumps.

Thanks for that reply, it was very useful. Lots of terms in equine world that newbies need to learn esp if you want to progress!

OP - I've tried googling some of the terms I'm new to and I get confused!!
