I am having stopping probs with my boy but only in the ring, I think it is a form of napping as the stops only occur when he turns away from the horses warming up next to the ring or if someone he knows is standing beside the arena. At most BE events the warm up areas are nearly always bang next to the ring. So what I am thinking is stuff warming him up over fences with everyone else, maybe pop a couple of fences the day before at home and just go straight in. I don't have problems xc. Have any of you experienced a similar problem or got any ideas of how to get over it as I am getting really fed up now. At home or in training he never ever stops even if I am seriously wrong at a fence.

Personnally I would warm up and also I would go to a few unaffliated jumping shows and try to work thru the Napping issue

I am only jumping tiny fences and would make sure he was well warmed up on the flat but away from everyone else warming up, its just to try to break the napping habit he has got into and get a couple of rounds without stops. I wouldn't dream of putting him at risk of injury.

Yes have been unaffiliated and most of the the warm ups are not right alongside the arena's therefore don't have problems. It just seems to be when horses are warming up next to the arena.

We warm one of our up on the flat well away from the sj ring and then jump a few xc fences to avoid the sj warm up ring not because he's nappy but because he cant always cope if the sj warm up is busy, with horses haviong poles down and people not looking where theyre going, we then trot him straight in the ring and he goes fine like that so you could try this.
I wouldnt jump in the ring without jumping outside first, even if its an xc fence.

As opposed to not warming up - could you have someone to befriend the steward - explain your problem and get you straight in the ring without standing around waiting to be called which can make some horses a bit clingy. Time it to perfection and you can jump a practice fence and then canter straight in - your practice fence almost becoming fence 1. Most stewards are really understanding if you explain politely what they could do to help.

Thanks I might try this, I think if I take him in the sj warm up with everyone else he does get clingy. We have been to a couple of BE events where the sj warm up was not alongside the ring and he was fine, its almost like he hasn't had time to get his bearings and just pops round. Its very frustrating.

I could not warm up my old horse as such. I had to avoid the warm up ring at all costs as he was so uptight and would spin round in front of other horses etc. We found it easier to walk around for ages and then go in without jumping. He was great once in the ring and was very bold and careful. What works for one wont for another though

Did you see the photo in horse and hound a few weeks back (back page) of the young girl practising her jumping in the car park with 2 men holding a pole?? Perhaps she had similar problems!! Did make me laugh - not sure if you could get away with it now though

I have a similar problem with mine, is a bitch around other horses and cannot be controlled in the warmup arena, so is usually worked in over in a corner of a field, if eg at patchetts she is from the lorry straight into the ring. I have had no adverse effects with doing this with her, just make sure she is kept warm whilst standing on board and then walk round the car park with her rugged up to keep the muscles warm before she jumps. Can't risk her trying to kill the other competitors in the warm up!

I am having the same problem of napping in the show jumping, not even at the fences just anywhere near a corner, so I have been out and done loads of show jumping shows and schooling and at our next event I am going to try with out jumping in the collecting ring as this seems to upset him more, so I will hav a trot and canter round the box park and if it is quiet try to pop the xc practice fence. I will let you know how the strategy works!
