Hi everyone,
We have an ok set of show jumps, but they need painting.
We aim to do that this summer, any ideas on the best paints? We have some poles that were previously coloured, and some rustics, can we just slap paint on them or do we need to gloss and prime etc??

Also looking for something different as cant really afford to buy some new poles, anyone use or build their own or make up something different??

Any ideas welcome :) Just wanting to spruce up this summer :)

I use any old paint that I have lying around the house (which is why some of my jump stands are very lurid pink and toxic green) I just slap the paint on and then slap a coat of varnish on over the top.

Then I paint flowers all over them! Some of our stands look as if they been decorated by 8 year olds! The horses don't care;) If Photoucket was working I would inflict photos on you, but as it isn't you are spared!

If stands or poles have already been painted then I sand them down before painting again but don't bother priming etc.

We make all our own jumps, cavaletti etc. OH just trundles down to our woods and chops down a load of pines, drags them home, strips them and there you go, jump poles! Jump stands are 4x4 posts, one 10' post makes a pair of stands. Bases are basic, 4 x 1' long bits of wood bolted on around the bottom. Not pretty, but functional, and far easier to cart around than bigger standards.

tryres and old tree branches make good rustic looking fences. Get friendly with a local landscaper / gardener and when they are cutting down peoples trees as for the best branches. I rescued mine and a friends of the bonfire pile. Could not resist them.

Also im getting some border fences (£3 poundland) and having feet put on them to use as fillers.

Local wood yards / fence makers have round poles for less than £10.

I also have those pole rolls which are plastic sleeves you put over jump poles to make them look shiny and new.
