Doing a wee bit of research to find out what the judges like to see in an ex-racer.

We done a local ex-racer class 2 years ago and got 2nd out of 4. I did muck up my show a bit, but I didn't get a chance to speak to the judge to see what else I done wrong/what was wrong with Claude etc.

This was us in our class (sorry it's the only close up pic I have and the other is a video still.) He was underweight and undermuscled, but hoping to do the class again next year now he has the weight and gaining muscle.

Any pics/info that any of you might have would be lovely, thanks! :)

I'm no expert but I don't think his bridle is showing him off to the max. I'd also ditch the buttonhole. He generally looks a lovely chap and it may not be that you did anything wrong, just that the two placed above you looked more established or were even better turned out or better examples.

For true correctness he should be in a double bridle or pelham (but only do this if he goes nicely in it) your hat would be navy and your gloves a little darker.

I wouldn't have rein stops on your reins as you don't need them.

I can't see your plaits, but if he is lacking muscle you can plait to excentuate his neck. You can quarter mark to excentuate his bottom.

I think you could get his sock a bit more blingy white, and I think I'd go for a broader noseband, worn a little lower (it looks very high) and a coloured noseband as he is too fine to be a hunter more a riding horse type.

Hope that helps, I've no experience of showing racers, but as you haven't got many replies I thought I'd try some cc. Feel free to ignore it if you think I'm spouting rubbish!

Some Reggie photos :D

They won the TARRA class, and are now entered for the RoR class at the Norfolk show. Al now wears a yellow shirt, and hopefully he'll be in a WH saddle by then, although his jumping saddle will do.

It appeared to mostly be judged off manners, so the fact he is mostly unflappable, will stand like a rock and goes sweetly with a pleasant expression meant he did well over some flashier horses with some bigger attitudes!

I think ChloeGHE has done some ex-racer classes and done fairly well, might be worth having a look at her blog.

Yay you're back (again) :D When I saw this thread I was going to say "OP you need to look for Lolo's threads about Reggie going showing" but you beat me to it. It has been busy for me in the office recently, not enough HHO time :( Glad to see you've got it all sorted and OP your horse looks very nice :)
