Hey all,

My traditional cob has a pathetic excuse for a mane and he frequently gives it a real harsh rub on a telegraph pole in his field, and his best pal nibbles at it as well.
It just doesn't seem to get any better, so I was considering hogging him, but am a bit worried he'll look odd ???

Could you show me pics of your hogged horses so I can see what he's gonna look like?
Also, he's a heavy duty tail and reasonable feathers, do those of you who hog manes, trim feathers as well or just leave the feathers??

Many thanks xxx

Here is our hogged and fully trimmed 11.2 cob.
When we first had him he had mane which I plaited but best thing we ever did was to make decision to give him the snip.

I dont have pics, but lots of my friends hog the mane. It depends on the neck, if he has a long skinny neck, then dont hog him, but otherwise, it'll look fine!! Fairly general rule. My friend hogged her fillys mane at about 18 mths as it was so thibk and long, it was driving her mad, and it's now grown back very nicely, and thinner, which I didnt think would happen!! (Kinda thought it would grow back thicker than ever).

Some food for thought, It does suit some horses, to be honest!! though it looks awful when growing back!!

I can post pics of my horses at various stages if it helps.

It currently looks more like the second pic. That is a year down the line though!
It will take ages to grow back. I agree with the comment regarding necks. If your cob has a nice neck he will look good hogged but if he has an upside down one or a long skinny one it is best hidden by the mane. I don't like hogged tails as growing back they look like a bog brush. I do prefer feathers off though with the hogged look.

Toffeesmarty - what a cute little fella
He looks good hogged and all trimmed :)

Thanks spike123, those pics are big help, again your horse looks great hogged.
Wow they really do grow back slowly though dont they, much slower than I thought.

He has got a nice chunky neck so I do think it will suit him, not sure about getting rid of his feathers though, I really do quite like them.

I really dont know what to do, I'd like him to have a lovely long flowing mane, not the excuse he has for a mane at the minute lol

Thanks for your complement! His ego is bigger thn his height!

Is the horse you are considering the coloured in your sig? If so and you want to show him in CHAPS?BSPA classes he has to be hogged and trimmed or fully hairy.

During the season I have to re-hog him every 2-3 weeks. During the winter - once every month.
Good luck with your decision!
