Want to set up a few very small jumps and poles for my youngster to have a play.....want to hear what people have used to improvise?

Here are ours! Wings are made from wood with holes in for the cups, and the poles are plastic piping that I masked up and spray painted. We've got three pairs of wings now and 6 poles that are all different colours. They work so well, need to make some more!

Due to lack of funds, I've had quite a few DIY jumps :P Here are a few;
Some palettes- used for stabling...

Apologies for the bad jumping positions, these were taken between 3 and 6 years ago! :P Definitely help bomb proof the ponies ;)

at my livery yard we our fortunate to have a few sets of wings and lots of poles, but i find the best thing to do with mine and my sister's young horses was to use home made objects under fences as fillers or even just as jumps, now my horse that has been broken a year jumps paddling pools, flags, tyres, road signs etc it has helped so much in the show ring no end

I didn't make the jumps, obviously, but the sheepy fillers were my creation. I made them small so they could be jumped by Fergles when he was still a hopeless incompetent baby pony, if I were to make some now I'd have them much bigger and more imposing :D

Not got any pictures yet- but also in the process of making jumps. Used the old fencing rails when we re-fenced the filed, painted them all stripey and multi coloured, used two old wood crates for stands and some of those blue barrel containers, tesco boxes :o and milk crates. Also have some lightweight scaffold poles covered in polystyrine tubing so quite soft. Have a couple of pvc rails- not too keen on them though. Cut a pallet in half and painted them to use as two fillers. The poles are short, more like skinny's :p But then in comps its easy to get them over the big ones :D :o Will try and get some pics when i finish them :rolleyes:

I am loving these ideas!

I'm always looking at those red and white plastic barrier things they have for roadworks and wishing I had the balls to pinch some, they'd make excellent jumps!!

I like the traffic cone wings, will definitely be giving that a go!
They're great! :D You can have them from the inside on the floor or on the top and if you put them up virtically most poles balance on the top too like so;

It was raining, hence the resemblance to a monk :cool:

speaking of road works, at a yard I used to be at they had one of these

(ignore the hatlessness, it's an old photo dating from the days where I thought I was invincible :rolleyes:)

traffic cones and water butts are fantastic!
Butts can be two heights, can be varying widths, can be used as fillers ect. ect.
Cones can be two heights or fillers too! And if the right way up they're dead hard to keep up so good practice.

My Y/O was given broken plastic wings and her hubby stuck some wood in the inside and made them usable again and we bought wooden poles cheap as chips from somewhere and got all the paint we could from the garage and painted poles :D they're some very odd colours though :rolleyes: :cool:

NOT ME RIDING!

A friend and I had a spook busting day with lots of different things we found round the yard - deck chairs, some old rugs, some dustbins, some crates and a massive white cardboard box which my mare took offence to and dropped me on top of it!

Brilliant stuff! loving the pics!

I can get hold of lots of empty 200lt containers...going to lie them on their side and tie 3 together.

Where is the p[lastic piping from? is it a B&Q trip?

Cones would be brilliant...any bombproofing would be good.

As I will soon get to play with him more in my own field then I intend to do a 'jftd' and raid the pound shop for bombproofing equipment! He tend to want to eat everything though...doesn't seem to shy at anything standard...he is not a normal horse!

Please make sure you use a strong and good enough quality of plastic, otherwise if hit they can shatter and injure your horse.

Look out for old doors which you can paint up into bright, garish, spooky fillers!

We got a load of tree-support poles from a garden center- they are about 8ft long and pointed at one end but much, much cheaper than jump poles.

OH painted them stripey. I was going to cut the pointed ends off ( obv not v pointed but more 'shaped' like a pencil) but actually its easier to balance them on the wings/garden chair/barrell or whatever - they don't roll off in the wind:p

I got a jump-stack cover but I havent used it yet- you can fit a couple of bales inside and its painted like a wall. It was about a tenner I think.

I've also stacked up tyres to make a wall.....

Not yet, bit skint atm - especially since the other week I shelled out for a smart sheepskin lined dr square for competing and the company appears to have folded / slipped off the radar :mad:
