I have an RID x Arab gelding out if Blackthorn RID. I bought him as a 3 year old, he is now 5 and planned to show him.

As yet I am not sure what classes to do with him (stuck between riding horse and hunter) but he could do Part Bred classes. However i had a comment a wee while ago about how he is not 'show pony' enough to do the Part Bred Arab classes.

Please could i have some opinions from anyone in the know? And please show me yours so i can compare :-)

How big is he?

He looks more Riding Horse than Hunter in those photos but there is no reason he should not do pba classes, some judges will like to see a horse with more substance they need to be true to type at a higher level but locally they will be a real mix and the way of going will probably be the most important factor.
 
Useful height:), small Riding Horse probably most suitable, possibly small hunter he would be too small and light for open hunter classes.

They do not have to be araby to show as a pba, the higher level the show the less they need to look like an arab the judges look for them to be true to type, this is not true to arab type but true to a class type ifyswim.

Your boy is lovely, useful height for small riding horse & small hunter possibly. Have a go at PBA classes and see how he does. He looks a lot like my old mare..

she was always placed middle of the road in PBA classes. She didn't have great conformation though. Same height too :)

Go out and have fun and give it a go, most judges give some good feedback if you ask nicely :)

ETA:Pic is of her in WH, where she was better placed than in PB arab. Also did well in riding horse :)

thanks gracie21 :-) yours are lovely! hes a good height, i think he might still have a wee bit of growing to do as well though but i agree hes too small for a weighted hunter so i dont want him to grow out of smalls!!
 
Harmony (4 yrs) is 3/4 Arab. Stands about 14/14.1 hoping she will stretch more in a couple of years. Haven't done anything with her, so she is now for loan to someone who might want to!

You will just have to 'suck it and see' with the PBA classes. It will be down to the judges preference. I have a PBA who is VERY TB looks wise and I call him my marmite horse. He's either up the top of the line or down the bottom. I tend to find that the male judges prefer his ride as he's more forward going and eventy type so you will just have to check your judges out. If I were you, I would try and 'pretty' him up a bit for the PBA classes. i.e. a very fancy show browband all sparkly colours. Pull his tail too and just make him a bit more 'showy' for the PBA classes. Good luck!

Yes thats the theory they should fit into a class that has a type not just be a pretty pba.

I watched a ridden class a few years ago and a very plain pony, in my view, won the class, as I knew the judge I asked her why it won as it was not in any way araby, she said that it was a good stamp of hunter pony and that was what they should be judged on. They obviously dont have to be a hunter pony type but must be of some type. The judge is an affiliated judge who judges Arabs and part breds at top level, judges will have preferences as to which type they like best but the basics are still important, good conformation, movement, way of going etc all count if properly judged.

If you want to show in RH and pba classes he will need to be turned out to type, pulled tail, well trimmed, velvet browband so you look the part.

Okay, I am deffo not an authority on pba's, showing and what not, but I can tell you what my boy's former owner told me (she had no reason to hard sell him to me, btw):

My boy Sammy did really well at county level showing in hand and ridden (before I had him, that is - I have him now for dressage);). He did the pba classes and then eventually was shown as a small hack. His old owner has come to "groom" and advise for me at shows -- unaff we tend to enter arab classes and small ridden horse and depending on the judge, some don't like him as mine is a bit fine for ridden horse. And then there will be some judges who prefer something to look more purebred than does mine - but here's some photos and you can see for yourself :)

As for attire, I have always worn tweed (which is acceptable) but according to old owner, the navy is a bit better. She actually gave me her old show coat :D to wear which is absolutely lush, I must admit.


erm, sorry for the *slight* photo overload. I love a chance to show him off!

Correct me if I'm wrong but don't PBA's only need 12.5% Arab blood to be registered? If so, they aren't all going to look ever so Araby or be fine and pretty. PBA classes are full of all sorts, shapes and sizes.

Provided the horse is conformationally correct and goes correctly, it comes down to the judge's own preference at the end of the day and some prefer the not so Araby look and vice versa :)

I have pure breds, so what do I know ;)

yeah mine is channelling the ID side on the good doer front! its scary he was so thin when i got him and folk on the yard used to call him wee fleabag as he was a poor wee thing!
 
i dont know fairytale the arab society will register him as a pb but ive only shown hunters before so a bit lost.....he moves beautifully and has good conformation soooo need to see :-)
 
You can wear a tweed or a navy - looking at your gee I would go with a tweed. Tends to be the hacks and Show Ponies that wear coloured jackets, although you will find a lot of people also wear the navy colours. You will get all sorts in the class however as it is a PBA class, there should be some arab 'trait' in the horse somewhere - even if its just a good tail carriage or something like that. They don't have to have the full kit and caboodle - dished head, big eyes, extravagent movement etc - just an element of these or one of these. At the end of the day, if your gee goes well and gives the judge a good ride then you should do well. I find it a really good class to compete in. Try and think of really good colours for your browband and match it with your tie. Always looks so smart. Perhaps a nice bright green, navy and then gold or silver! They aren't cheap but defo worth the investment.
 
This is my PBA (50% Arab, 50% Welsh) at 14.2hh doing 'Riding Club Type' class, it was open to up to 15hh horses, and we came 2nd, qualifying for a further area comp, in which he came 3rd. Sorry if it's a bit big, can't work out how to re-size. And excuse the expression (mine) as I hadn't ever jumped in an arena before - as you can see, he didn't care, took it all in his stride.
I showed him in hand as a youngster in Hunter Pony Youngstock and did well (2nd at County level), over the yeards we have done PBA classes, and Working Hunter Pony (with anther rider).

my boy is 50% arab x ISH and we do a bit of everything, WH, RH, PBA, i find he is a little light for Hunter but he is to big for riding horse but we still give it a go regardless.

PBA classes its just down to preference, i went to one local show and i was placed last without even so much as a glance and came first at an agricultural show! some of the bigger shows will cater for large and small pba. at 16.2 he does dwarf them in the pba classes!

Try Riding Horse or Small Hunter classes and see which he does best in. He's rather lovely - definately heavier than the pba that most judges have in mind but definately a very nice type.

This is my pba - theouogh I no longer own him - he is now doing well in endurance. He was shown in hand in Sporthorse suitability classes and did quite well.
