Show me your wooden stables please!

Move is progressing (for now...!?) and am set to have a row of 4 wooden stables a tack room and feed store. Would love some pics of how you make yours look nice both inside and outside!

Inside they're all just wooden with kickboards half way up. They looked a little dark and sad on viewing. I've seen stone/brick stables painted black or green on the bottom and white on top but has anyone done this for wooden stables?

I’d have 100% kick boards if you can. Mine sometimes shrink in hot weather and get gaps between the boards. Plus it’s more insulation from hot/cold.

This stable in the pic is 15 years old. I don’t think they’re dark. I have thought about painting them black/white inside, but just creosoting five stables, a feed room and several sheds every year is already far too much time!

I dare not show the inside of my feed room - it's chaotic! What roofing are you having? My original block of 4 has black roofing material and is a lot darker than the block of 2 which went up later and have perspex in the roof. If I was ever re-roofing the older block I'd go for something clear in the roof to make them lighter.

These look nice! They don't look dark - but looks like they have a skylight pannel thingy (I have no idea what these are called!!) which unfortunately the stables at the new place don't have. There is electric though to each stable but not ideal for day time!

I fully expect my aspirations for a tidy yard will last up until getting the keys.

Not sure what roofing is but as mentioned above it doesn't have any panels that let the light through at the moment unfortunately.

At the minute the stables and roof are all black - although the stables are in dire need of a repaint!

Mine are wooden internal stables but we put matting over the brick half way up.


Currently my stables are a glorified hen house but you get the idea. Ponies are out through the summer

ETA I keep everything tidy by having a man who loves to tidy up my mess

This is the inside of mine when I painted it. The outside is the same brown as the bottom. I just paint the white every couple of years and the brown less often. I just used white silk emulsion and I think the brown is wood paint.

Ah so interestingly I, after having my first block with clear panels requested not the second time round because I don’t think it helped with how hot they get in summer.

I tried to paint mine white inside, looked lovely til I put horses back in! Don’t do that!

I’ll go take a picture but ignore my beds! We are on summer sized flat beds because everything was getting so dusty before the rain started!

Far from inspirational but this is a yard on a budget and I love it! It’s all due repainting now.
The first picture shows we just hacked windows out of the back for airflow! They have Perspex on sliders for winter but I rarely close them.
I will paint the bottoms darker this year, as you can see I’m the medium stable I tried to paint the insides of the boards, that’s not really worked well!
They are still being improved here and there. I got home one evening to see Oh had added a string of fairy lights along the roof over hang and little down lighters on the name plates

We’ve boarded ours out fully and put windows in the back to let more light in.

I painted the bottom sage green and tops cottage white.

They were dark brown before and were very dark.

Ooh thanks everyone! This is really helpful. I think first job will be fully boarding them by the looks of it. Then work out the paint. I do like the white, but I'm not brave enough to paint it all shite Need a poo colour around the bottom haha.

Tbf I think skylights just make the stables hotter x

My haybarn has a clear panel and I wouldn’t have one in a stable. It gets much warmer than inside my stables and makes my hay too dry in the summer.

I recently cut out a large window in the dividing wall in my stables which they seem to like for sociability and it improved air flow and makes the stables lighter too . The window has strengthening struts

I used wood stain rather than paint and have black fixtures, it looks incredibly smart. Inside I have fully boarded; bottom half is black and top half is white. It looks very smart!

It’s easier to do it on your phone then you can resize them. It says somewhere “upload. Actual size” then you click that and choose medium.

mine are more or less in my garden, not ideal but its where they were when we moved in!

we have opening windows in the back to allow air flow, they do get noticeably hotter than the brick stables are previous yard.

if i ever had to build, i wouldn't have fancy stables i would have massive cattle pens, opening in to yards, with free access to the fields also. the only fancy but would be the tack room and the wash box!!!!
