My new boy has been fed 1 scoop of pasture mix and 1 scoop of hifi while out of work for about 10 months. i've taken him on and have noticed his ribs coming through. My other boy Ty has just come back off loan where he wasn't ridden much - he was on a scoop of showmix, half nuts and half hifi. He's quite full of himself since he got back and looks great so cut him down to half showmix and one hifi.

So, I'm moving them both to DIY and want to make my life a bit easier - plus they'll be out 247 soon....on good grass. So should I just give new boy some nuts in his feed and ween other boy onto pasture mix? Just don't want ty to loose condition as he really does look stunning - got a neck like a rock so not sure what she's done to him if she wasn't riding him!!

ETS both are in moderate work - 5/6 times a week although new boy gets schooled more and jumped whereas Ty is just a hacking horse....

I was always taught they make mix for owners and nuts for horses... as us owners like the idea that they are getting all sorts of different stuff to eat, when infact nuts are better for horses!
Why not wean oscar onto show mix? If Ty looks so good on it?

he has worked - he was lunged to death in sidereins.....

Don't believe that nuts have as much nutritional value - Ty looked shocking until he started to get the oils etc that are in showmix. Just don't want them both on show mix and move onto really good grass mid april.

I could well die!

I may try oscar on showmix....and see if it keeps the weight on I guess - a scoop of pasture mix and scoop of alfa a was just enough to maintain his weight, over winter, without any work !

Nuts will have the nutritional value that is stated on the packaging.
My nutritional training has always taught me to feed fibre. You up the energy value of the fibre if condition lacks and down it if too there is too much condition or spring/autumn grass is about.
If they are on light/medium work then I wouldn't have them on any mix. Feed fibre (hi fi/Alfa/dried grass), fibre or grass nuts, speedie beet, vits/mins and instant linseed for coat shine etc. with electrolytes added as needed.
Ad lib good quality hay or haylage. Be careful of having them too covered going on to good spring grass.

Problem is, where they are at the moment there is no way they would survive on that sort of diet....they'd be skin and bone. You have to remember they're both TB's!

Think I'll poss move Ty over to pasture mix (he's only getting half a scoop and one of alfa a twice a day) and then keep oscar on pasture mix as he'll probably put on a bit of weight when we move to better grass anyway.

Oscar is hacked/schooled or lunged 6 days a week but Ty is definately getting less work at the moment - guess we need to move and see how things pan out.

Thanks all!
