As per the title really - I am trying to choose a name for my new filly as she needs to be registered but am considering whether to use the Capitall prefix from her sire or make my own up as I am also breeding another foal from my mare this year from the same stallion but then want to use another stallion next year please help...The filly is black to make approx 16hh was born on May 1st and her dams name is Topaz some people on the breeding forum have come up with Capitall Gem, I like Total Eclipse as she is black out of a spotty, or black diamond but not sure and would love some more suggestions......anybody?

I always used the sire prefix with a mix of the sire and dams name for the follow on.
Eg Sire was Pemberley Mr Darcy Dam was Wentworth Spirit Nymph. Colt was Pemberley Mr Spirit.

Using the prefix:

Capitall Diamond
Capitall Black Diamond
Capitall Investment
Capitall Idea
Capitall Onyx
Capitall Opal
Capital Obsidian
Capitall Agate

Or use the names on their own, or other gemstone names eg. Tiger's Eye, Moonstone.

Sorry, you will NOT be able to use the Capitall prefix as that belongs to the breeder of your stallion and as such is already registered with the Central Prefix Register so it is protected. I don't think (but stand to be corrected) that you could use it as part of the name as in - ???? Capitall, at least with that spelling either.

I like Total Eclipse but think you might find it has already been used so it would have to have a number behind it unless you registered a prefix beforehand. To a certain degree, that will depend on which society you register with.

Here you are and it has a handy checker so you can see if your name for a prefix have already been taken -

I was lucky, when I regestered Ralph with the sports horse society, he was the second Ralph, so, he became Ralph || (thats the nearest I can get to roman numerals

Oh Thanks for that MFH 09 I didnt realise that you couldnt use the Capitall prefix - there goes that one and all suggestions put forward (eeek) oh its so difficult. If her breeder registers her can we use the prefix then?

Just checked on the register and it says Capitall Total Eclipse isnt in use or Capitall Time will Tell isnt does this mean I can use it ?

you can only use a stallion's prefix if you have permission from his breeder. it may be worth trying to contact them but otherwise you'll have to come up with your own prefix - which if you are planning on breeding more in the future is probably worth it.

Oh They are registering her for me they just want me to name her, so it should be fine, plus my mare is going to the same stallion.

In that case of course she will have their prefix and it's nice of them to give you the chance to name her. You just have to pick now something they haven't used before!

Thats ok maybe I wasnt clear, I have bought the filly and my mare is going to the same stallion next week - I would like to think of my own prefix as want to breed from her in the future but its so hard to think of something original.....?

My filly is called Primitive Prima Donna. She is by Primitive Star and was born on ladys day and seen as how Prima Donna is the first lady it just seemed perfect for her.
I was lucky, when I spoke to Louella they said I could use Primitive as my prefix but i understand that you cant on a lot of stallions.

If the filly was bred by the people who own the Capitall prefix then yes her name should be Capitall xxxxxx
When you breed your own foal next year then you can use your own prefix. Our prefix is Latin and means to fly or soar so you can really use anything. A lot of people use there house name, or farm name, some people combine bits of family names.
The central prefix register will only tell you if a prefix is registered not the whole name.
