I'm bringing my new loan horse home on Saturday. He's lovely, but I'm not keen on his name.
He'll keep his stable name of course, and he has a registered name. But just for fun and because I think it's a challenge, can anyone suggest me a show name for him based on his stable name.

He's bright bay, 16.3, TB [Content removed].

You can't just arbitrarily change his name. No. 1 your not his owner, and No. 2 you're not his breeder.

Ok. Well can I point out that playing about with his name on a forum is different than changing it. Arbitarily or otherwise.

You've asked for suggestions on a show name. I took that to mean you were looking to change it for 'showing' purposes, and because you didn't like it.

As a breeder I would be MIGHTILY peeved off if someone didn't use the registered name of the pony. The prefix/breeding is a breeders shop window.

Say someone entered a pony called Rains, other people liked the look of it and might look into getting one of the same bloodlines, they look in the catalogue, see just 'Rains' and assume it's a randomly bred, unregistered pony and forget it. However if the pony had been entered under Mirkwood Rainsong then you would know where he came from.

Always use their proper registered name for competing. Do us breeders thay courtesy.

Can you see it now?

I've never not been able to see it.

However, you prefaced it with I'm not keen on his name.

I took it to mean that you would be going out and competing/showing, and wishing to use another name. Why else would you be asking for name change suggestions? Fun or not.

Vaguely...............:p

Out of interest, what is the horses registered name?

No, fun is a bit hazy for me too. Was it that stuff we used to have before weekends were for taking deep litter up??

Can't remember. She told my RI, I think, but I'd switched off because I they were talking about yard politics. Something I stay well away from! It's not important because I won't be showing him, just schooling and hopefully fun rides.

You should find out. Chances are the horse could be beautifully bred, and something to shout from the roof tops.

EDT: The name will be on the passport, which you should have.

He could be the most beautifully bred horse in the world but TBH, I probably wouldn't shout it from the rooftops because it means nothing to me. A horse could be a full brother to Valegro - so what? it doesn't make it Valegro. We have some horses on our yard with fancy bloodlines, whose owners say "he's a half brother to Screaming Lord Such and Such" and "she's the grand daughter of Ra-ra Fancy Pants" and I try to be polite because they're obviously very pleased but..... I just ....don't care.
I don't 'do' showing, and if I compete it's only for the sake of getting dressed up for a bit and having some pictures taken.

I think the point is the good breeding thing is not for you to enjoy, but is important to the horse's breeders.

For example, my sister's ex-racer is called Something's Up. It's a awful name, because when they go XC the commentator always says "...Something's Up, Alice Graham..." somewhere and then grinds to a halt as they realise what they just said.

However, he is called that and so that is what he competes as. It means anyone can go away and find out he's by Alflora (famous daddy) out of Country Choice. And the new boy is White Smoke, which means people can find out his sire was Sagamix, also pretty famous.

By keeping the name, you're advertising for the sire/ mare...

I like silly names though. Much better than the awful stuff people make up on here for show name questions usually :D

That's fair enough. But I'm always interested to know about my horses breeding. The last horse I bought was beautifully bred (although I didn't know it until I'd bought him and really studied his passport). It gave me an enormous sense of pride knowing who he was related to, and even more gobsmacked that I'd purchased something of such immense quality.

But it doesn't matter does it?
While he's in my care, no commentator is going to say his name, it's never going to be written in any show schedule, it's never going to be scrawled on the back of a red rosette. No one is going to go away and find out he's by xxx out of xxx and his grandaddy was xxx. No one. Because his registered name will be sitting in his passport doing nothing - Even if it's amazing, I have no reason to use it and it will be sitting there wether I decide to play about with fun names for him or not.

No matter how fantastic his breeder is, they're getting no advertising through me.

I had an ex racer called 'My Life's Ambition', God awful name but in the days when it wasn't worried what you called them in the ring, he arrived with me because due to a fractured pelvis they were going to shoot him and his head groom didn't want that. I asked what he called him and he said 'just Jack' so that's who he was in the ring, 'Just Jack'.
Having bred some of my own though I have always tried to name them with something that others would find acceptable and be happy to use.

If you are so dismissive of a horse's registered 'show name' then why would you propose this 'fun challenge'?

You have joined in. It's a game of 'all pile on' cleverly disguised as a show name thread. Anyway, who said I was dismissive of it. At no point did I say I was actually going to change it, it's just like when you put your own name into those "porn star name generators" it doesn't mean you have a biro poised over the deed-poll form!

......you didnt? did you???

You asked AM if she got out of bed the wrong side today... perhaps you should direct that question at yourself:rolleyes: question marks and exclamation marks much?

You open a post about name change, and understandably some people point out that your horse should be shown under his registered name. Now, you said just for fun, but that did not say... just for fun as I actually wont be using this. You say you dont like his registered name, but cant actually remember it. The above is all fine, but even 'if' people decided that they had little better to do than to play this game (just for fun) youve given no indication as to his breeding, his dam and sire and that is generally what people used to inspire show names just for fun or otherwise.

Its not a game of 'all pile on' but your first response to AM's quite logical and understandable post was pretty venemous, your subsequent posts continued to be defensive and aggressive... Whilst AM is more than capable of defending herself, Im pretty sure that had you responded to any poster in such a manner, people would have thought you were 'narky' and acted in kind

Oh, I'm sorry. I've had some pretty venomous and spiteful responses here in the past, and read lots which were directed at other people, with very little actual support being given, other than to a select few who form the 'inner circle' I thought that's just how we were meant to behave on here! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Didn't think I'd have to spell it out that I wouldn't be using the name, I never said I didn't like his registered name, and why are you taking it so seriously?? It's an internet forum. Anyone who wants actual advice goes elsewhere - like a friend, or an ri or a vet, the whole thing is just a way of killing time, nothing more.

Actually you did. I take the phrase 'I'm not keen on it' to mean you don't like it.

As for going elsewhere for advice, true. But equally people do post on here asking for advice - as you yourself have done.
